Flamengo hasn't be able to play in Maracana due to the Pan-American games, so their attendance has been hurt from that.

excitement is high but money is low. Even with extremely low ticket prices (for american standards) many people cannot make it, specially if they're trying to take wife and kids to a game.

For many years attendance, as an overall average, has not been very high for many of Brasil's clubs.

But it's not to say stadiums aren't getting filled, it's just that it's not very common. If a club is in a good phase, specially when not expected, then certaily you'll see big crowds. Botafogo for example has had a few good games with big crowds, 45,000 against fluminense opening up the engenhao new stadium, and 47,000 this past week against sao paulo. These two have been the largest crowds so far for serie A this year.

Earlier in the year, when Romario was attempting his 1000th goal, a game between botafogo x vasco drew around 60-70,000

today, flamengo drew 34,000 in its win against nautico

Botafogo was lucky that they had the home field rights during Fla x Bota. That is the only reason they are up there. Where did you get these numbers, sidis? I saw a list last week and Flamengo was in front of Botafogo and was only a thousand away from Sport.

Flamengo has brought in excess of 60,000 the past few matches, including almost 90,000 against Santos in its last match

it's impossible to compete with flamengo as far as attendance. If the team is doing well, and the fans motivated (lately motivated also by breaking records) they can fill up easily.

To have an average of over 30,000 for the season is completely unthinkable in Brasil in the past 10-15 years.
