http://www.oem.com.mx/esto/notas/n349436.htm

I can't say it any better than what Hugo said. Mexican teams, because of the way the tourneys are set up, would rather play a SA player than a promising youngster because of the pressure to win the short tournaments. The youngster stagnates from lack of playing time and never fulfills his potential. Playing in the Libertadores and the Sudamenricana is great, but Mexico needs to add a League Cup for the Primera and Copa Mexico for all divisions. I don't know why they don't do it, it would make them a ton of money. It would also give these youngsters not only a place to play, but learn to deal with the pressures of knockout tournaments.

Persoanlly, I think that its only half the problem. To say that the extranjeros take away spaces for young Mexican players is an over simplification. Even if you got rid of all extranjeros, in a few years, the league would be facing the same problems that it is now. The problem is that because so few mexican players migrate, that the older players are also an obstacle to younger players. Coaches are reluctant to take chances on youngsters and would rather play it safe with those they know, even if it is mediocre. The day that more Mexican players also start migrating to play in other countries, clubs will be forced to develop young players because they won't have a choice ...

I certainly don't disagree with anything you say, but I do think we need to probe deeper. The problem is systemic. Who benefits by having complete trash like chamagol, vuoso, and rodallega in the league? Their agents, and the front office guys who are getting the kickbacks when they sign these worthless players to big contracts. And let's not pretend like it doesn't happen. Femexfut can tell us all day long how they run a league on the up and up, yet they allow their employees to scalp world cup tickets.
And then of course Mexico has its famous draft, which I just cannot see how FIFA allows it to continue. Players are free agents in name only.
It is sad to me that over the years there have only been 4 teams that consistently cultivate players, and give them opportunities to play: UNAM, Atlas, Chivas, and America.

That's a good point. Take for example Guadalajara, who doesn't use foreigners. Their U-20s are stuck behind other Mexicans, because so few go to Europe. They finally transferred Diego Martinez so they could use Omar Esparza, but their forwards are going to ride the bench until they are substantially better than Bravo/Medina. I've said before that Vela would probably still be on the bench for Chivas (under Chepo, unless Vergara pushed for him to start for marketing/promotional reasons), which is a sad thing. He clearly was better off playing in the Spanish second division, as would many other young Mexicans. The 20/11 rule helps somewhat, but I'm sure we'll start to see players who started because of 20/11 go back to the bench once they pass that age.
Of course, part of the problem with exporting is that teams think "this is my star, he is worth $5 million" so never make a sale. Instead, they should focus on selling younger players for much less. They are more likely to open up the Euro market with several sales that way, than by selling a Marquez or Guardado every 8 years.

Agreed, and if the U-20's are as talented as advertised, then why doesn't chivas loan them out? Because Mexican teams would rather sign unproven 2nd division talent from Brazil and Argentina than to tkae a chance on these guys.
This is truly one of the big benefits of having Hugo as the NT coach. He understands the benefit of playing and growing against very stiff competition. And before people point to Hugo's lackluster record with the Tri as a player, let's not forget that he was not needed to qualify for 1986, and the FEMEXFUT threw away his chance for glory in 1990 when he was at the very peak of his career. If he can't effect change to correct the fundamental flaws that weigh down Mexican footie, then get used to round of 16 and occasional quarterfinal knockouts, coz that's as far as Mexico will ever go.

That reminds me of this-
http://www.mediotiempo.com/noticia.php?id_noticia=41955
I am not picking on Morelia, and maybe they'll turn out to be great for the team, but this kind of stuff gets frustrating. Is Ever Guzman (or whoever) that much of a headache or declined so much that he's not worth another shot?
