The San Jose Earthquakes playing at the George Best Epicenter.
As great as George Best was, he would not be my first pick of San Jose Earthquakes players to name the stadium after.
The Dwayne Derosario Epicenter would be more fitting.

If they can name Candlestick/3Com Park/Monster after Bill Walsh, why not?

Because Bill Walsh had a much greater impact on the 49ers and the city of San Francisco the George Best ever had on the Earthquakes and the city of San Jose.

Actually, Best did leave quite an impact on the city's soccer fans as much as he could, anyway. The team was horrible and then the sport and the league folded 3 years later, so he could only do so much.
So what kind of an impact does the name Epicenter have on the city? None because its not named after anyone its just a pun on the team name. Therefore, if you have to find a name of a human being to name the stadium after & who is the best human soccer ever to don a San Jose jersey, who else is left?

Naming the stadium after a person is just wishful thinking, that is, unless you want to fork over the $$$ to name it after yourself.
It will be the [Corporate Name] Epicenter at San Jose.

Pssst. Don't tell anyone but it won't be.
That's not how Corporations use their brands. They won't dilute their brand with a cute
little nick name especially one with a negative and eventually disastrous connotation.
Shhhh. Thats just between you and me though.

If your stories are in any way as good as the articles i've read from you then this will surely be worth a read. Not to mention that Georgie's my all-time favourite player.

Bill Walsh had a significant impact on the entire NFL, not just the Niners. I don't know the exact number, but a staggering number of NFL coaches (head coaches and assistants) can be traced back to Bill Walsh. Not only that, but he also had significant influence on the rules of the league.

What? Are they made up and/or abandoned on the go as MLS rules are?

If Bill Walsh made NFL rules then AEG make MLS.......rules 101!

The NFL routinely changes some of their rules. There is a "rules committee" and they review current rules and make suggestions regarding new rules or changes to existing rules. Walsh was heavily involved with the rules committee. All sorts of things from protecting the quarterback to what constitutes pass interference were influenced by Walsh. His offensive strategy was far more effective after the quarterback was more well protected and defensive pass interference rules were broadened. He was also instrumental in changing crack back blocking rules, blocking below the knees, and several other changes that were advantageous to his style of play.

Perhaps not, but, it did not stop this team from using "Epicenter".

And from what I heard, that is the cute little nickname the folks at Earthquakes Soccer LLC use for the proposed stadium.
And speaking of a "negative and eventually disastrous connotation", what about, "Earthquakes"?

That's all fine and I'm happy with the name Earthquakes and I'm sure we'll get many corporate sponsors and advertisers.
But the point is that a company, say Adobe, won't let their brand name have Epicenter attached to it. They spend millions every year in building equity in the Adobe brand. They want their customers to have specific reactions and feelings when they see the name Adobe and they are extremely careful with what they attached to it and how and where they use it.
If Adobe did buy naming rights it would most likely be in the form "Adobe Field" , "Adobe Park" or "Adobe Center" where Field, Park and Center are just generic descriptors of the stadium - they don't distract from the Adobe brand (think about other stadiums with corporate naming rights). With "Adobe Epicenter" - Epicenter, being a cute lil'nickname, does distract from the Adobe brand and it does carry a negative, eventually disastrous, connotation. Adobe will spend millions for naming rights only if it helps reinforce and build the Adobe brand. Epicenter does the opposite.
EQLLC may be using Epicenter for the name of the stadium but I doubt that they've tried to sell it yet. When Adobe says they'll pay $6M/year for the "Adobe Center" but won't do "Adobe Epicenter" what do you think will happen?
Epicenter won't be part of any corporate naming agreement.
Your Rancho Cucamonga example kind of proves my point. The stadium is named the "Epicenter" not the "Best Western Epicenter". I understand that RC has been trying to sell the naming rights but it hasn't happened yet.

i am kinda in agreement with Fuaeg here. The stadium is a lot more likely to be called <Sponsor> Park, or field etc. The epicenter will be its "unofficial" nickname, much like the shark tank is for our other San Jose Venue.
