cool pics falvo, thanks
now someone needs to post a link to that video where he dribbles around at least 50 guys and scores (as if that only happened once), i can't seem to find it any more.
And I believe one of those players he dribbles around is Dominic Kinnear. :-)
I attended that game. What an amazing sequence!

It couldn't have been.....In 1980/81 when Best played for the Quakes Dominic Kinnear, was only 13 & 14 years old respectively.

Maybe Thomas Rongen but not Dom.

My mistake. I just checked Dom's Bio. I've forgotten who it
was that Best dribbled around but could swear it was someone with EQ history.

Two of them were Thomas Rongen and Ray Hudson.

Colin Fowles & Ken Fogarty were two more....Bern Holzenbein could have been another...but can't remember I just remember he went around 9 guys and 1 guy twice....

any mention of George Best is entirely rep-worthy but sadly, I must spread some rep around. Someone help me out please.
Still amazes me that my boyhood hero (from his days with MU) played some of his last games in SJ...

From what I gathered, George Best's 2nd to last professional goal was the amazing one he scored against the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers in July of 1981 while in a San Jose Earthquakes uniform at Spartan Stadium. I believe his last goal ever was scored just before the end of the game when referee Ian Foote called for a pk in the box as Tony Crescitelli was fouled in the box. Best beat a horde of Striker defenders and scored the advantage goal to send the match intro OT. During the OT he took a shot which Jan Van Beveren was lucky to parry and the rebound went to Mustafa Hukic who scored the game winner in that same game.

I actually was at this game. You can see Ray Hudson with his socks rolled down after Best scored.

After the Earthquakes he played for Bournemouth,Brisbane Lions &
Tobermore United. I don't believe he scored, however.

That clip never get's old...very few with his talent. Quite amazing that you were there. Old Spartan certainly has left us with some great memories...

I was there too. Easily the one of the most memorable, if not THE most memorable, of the San Jose Earthquakes for me. Something that comes close is the end of the 1974 season when the Quakes needed to beat LA by at least three goals to get into the playoffs.....5-0 Quakes, all goals scored in the second half. The players (who used first names on their jerseys) came into the stands after the final whistle.....it was really a special moment. Move on to 2003 for another special time, but I think almost everyone reading this knows what that is all about.

Great YouTube link and classic George Best. There had been a previous link on these threads, to an Apple video storage site, which got removed, so it was a trip to see this again, only this footage was taken from a different perspective. This gives a more long range "big picture" look.
I remember just after he died BBC Radio 5 interviewed his ex-wife who told about how she was driving back home one day in San Jose, I think from picking up their kid from school or something, and there in the median between six lanes of traffic this wobbly figure appeared and it was George, wasted out of his mind.
She said it was like having two kids to look after and she finally said to Best she couldn't cope with him anymore, he was heading toward the bottom of the barrel, he was a mess, and he wouldn't respond to any help.
So he packed up and went back to Europe. A short while later she picked up a European paper or mag and there he was, splashed across the front cover, looking perky and bright with his new fiance, a Scandinavian super-model, on his arm.
As she spoke I couldn't help but think, that sounds like ol' George.
I remember not long after arriving in San Jose I was with my American girlfriend at the time and walked into a bar (Lancashire Tavern, was it?) and George, affable as ever, was playing darts and being his laid back self. My jaw dropped as I said to her "that's George Best!" She had no idea who George Best was. She told me I looked like I had seen the second coming.
He was a partyer and he didn't know how to... couldn't... stop. But he was very down to earth and treated everyone as one of the lads. Not the ego tripping attitude we see in many of today's "stars".

Yes, George could often be found at one of the local pubs, even if he was not drinking at the moment. The pub you mention was the Lancashire Hot Pot on Saratoga Ave (I think). I do remember that George was among those who names appeared on the wall as having been able to end a dart game perfectly (3 throws)....I am not a darts person, so I don't know what you call it, but it's a big deal in darts.
Near the end of his Quakes stay, he went missing (at least to the club and press) and the Mercury-News sports page had quite a large, bold headline "Where's George?". That night I walked into Jersey's Tavern in Campbell and there was George Best, both elbows on the bar, circling a bottle of beer. I walked over and said "They are looking for you". He just flashed that great smile of his and said "They know where I am".

I read in his book that he thought San Jose/Campbell was the most boring place in 1980-81. Compared to the way it is now, the town has changed dramatically. I'm sure he wouldn't recognize Campbell especially. To tell the truth, I think all of the bars with the exception of Cardiff & Kartum are the onlyones left from those days. Andy's BBQ along with everyone else is gone....I think Best mostly hung out in Capitola and in Los Gatos at Carrie Nations and of course the Britania Arms in Cupertino ..
