Player A is the second to last defender. Player B is two yards behind him, in an offside position. Player C is on the attacking side with player B. He drives a ball deep near player A. Unknowing of player B behind player A, player a steps over the ball and dummies it. He was going to turn to play it to the Goalkeeper. Now, after the dummy, player B gains possesion.
Is he offside?
Playing devils advocate, i say that player A legitimately played the ball backward with his intential miss at the ball. I say thats as effective as passing it to the offside player.
Thoughts?

Yes he is still offside.
Player A didn't play the ball he dummied it. If offside Player B touched the ball after the play on the ball from player C, then he should be called for offside!

I agree that he's offside as well. Player A never possessed the ball directly; it would be impossible to sell a call like this simply because you're argument is saying that he played the ball by not playing the ball. If you make a call like that, and then justify it with that reasoning, I'm sure that "He just misplayed the ball... he didn't ever touch it" will not be the most obscene thing you'll hear... particularly if it results in a goal.

Thoughts?Under this theory, let's put a defender a step off the goal line. The ball is kicked his way by an attacker. The defender dummies it, stepping over the ball allowing it to go out of play for a goal kick. But wait - he played the ball by not playing it, so it's a corner kick.
I don't think so.

I like the theory of playing the ball by not touching it. I could have been a great goalkeeper. ;)
