***Since the last thread got merged and has almost 500 post in it...i figured i would start over with a new one***

I was thinking when i was driving in my car today what would be a good name for an Atlanta team. And it seems that all the names that have been suggested are half-attempts to tie to the region without offending anyone or are just plain weird.

Well, what better name than Atlanta Pride?
(1) What better way to stick it to the yankees that want the south to live in shame or that think they're more superior to us? Southerners are a very proud people. And it would be good to tie to the entire region without having to add the name "South" in the name.
(2)Also, it would be great for attracting the general sports fan because the name in itself literally exudes pride and doesn't sound something like a 1st grader came up with...for example, i could only imagine trying to get my dad to go to a Terminus ATL game!
(3) There's nothing offensive about it because you can be black and be proud to be from Atlanta.
(4) It doesn't sound particularly cheesy...no less than Georgia Force, Chicago Fire, LA Galaxy, New England Revolution, etc... (which i think are good names anyways).
(4) [It's not an animal name!] It sounds like a soccer team name WITHOUT BEING A COPY CAT!!!! In addition, wasn't it Manchester United that came up with their name to rebel against Manchester City? i don't know the full story, but from what i've heard is that United came from the fact that the fans were "united" in bringing their team up. Well...our fans are "proud" to be from Atlanta in which most people think they shouldn't.

Anyways, i think Atlanta Pride has a lot of potential, and i hope that the rest of yall will join me on this one. As far as colors go, i'd prefer dark green & black but i think navy & gold probably suit the name better. And as far as a logo...i'd like to see a shield with a phoenix holding arrows (showing what we have overcome).

I live in atlanta.
Calling the team Atlanta Pride is a bad mistake. Remember, midtown atlanta has the biggest homosexual population this side of the mississippi per capita (excluding NE cities). Atlanta Pride.... gay pride.......
Doesn't work.

How about Atlanta Pessary?

AFC sounds good to me. AFC name is owned by the Atlanta Fayette County Lightning.

would the team be in Fayette County then? Personally, i think the team should be wherever is the most accessible to Gwinnett, DeKalb, Cobb, and Fulton (and right off the interstate and MARTA accessible). Yeah, it might be expensive, but you get what you put into it.

Atlanta Silverbacks is not a name I would like. I know for sure that the Silverbacks ownership group will not be happy if an MLS team comes to town and steals their "thunder" that they never even had.

The owners sound like a bunch of douschbags. They stole money from the former soccer clubs named MetroNorth and United Quest (both clubs I had played for). They're both now called NASA (North Atlanta Soccer Association).

how did they steal money from MetroNorth and United Quest?

Both clubs made the mistake of joining the Silverbacks 'youth ranks' so they named themselves after the Silverbacks. They joined them in the idea that the Silverbacks stadium and training grounds would be a launch pad to an MLS team. The location of the stadium turned out to be a terrible location for both clubs that are located in Cobb County.

The Silverbacks needed money to build their stupid little thing so they duped those clubs into saying it would be an investment for Atlanta soccer. It turned out to be a bad idea. I have talked to alot of the parents of both clubs and they agree.

I used to work with a guy who coached with Metro North/NASA (he may still). I remember well talking with him about that stuff. I think the 'Backs were more or less trying to "corner the market, as it were," on youth soccer in the Atlanta area, by building a "super club" for player development. I never could understand wh somebody would jump ship from an already successful program (like Lightning, Concorde, United Quest, Cobb Futbol, etc.), and go with a startup that would no doubt be more expensive (especially figuring in travel time and gas), and had no guarantee of succeeding. Oh well.

A lot of youth soccer people don't like what the Backs have done.

I'm curious. how much of an effect would it have to name a team Atlanta Rangers? in other words, would that bring out Rangers FC fans and piss off Celtic fans? if we name the team Rangers would we have to go with the color blue instead of a dark green/black (that i was hoping an Atlanta team would have)? regardless, i think it's a good name (and yes, i still hate names like Real, Bayern, Deportivo, Atletico, FC, etc... that have nothing to do with the American-English language)

Rangers is a name I could live with. There are two American teams with that name (TX and NY), and it would appeal to the Euro-(fill in the blank). As for Rangers v. Celtic problems, I hardly think so. This is Atlanta, not Glasgow, and despite the name, I think (or rather hope), that all Atlanta soccer fans would rally around the team, regardless. This would be especially true if the colors were, say, hunter green/yellow/tan, to reflect the Army Rangers, rather than the Glasgow team. Both Texas and NYR are red/white/blue. I happen to like blue/green/white. I'm a little tired of something and black as a color scheme. It looks too youth league. Besides, you want to wear a black jersey or shorts in Atlanta in July? :D

So guys, as owner of the best idea for an Atlanta Team name (The Atlanta Firebirds) I now have come allong with a new idea that turns AFB into crap! My newest Idea is: Rising of Atlanta. Very euro (Juventus of Turin) very southern (the south will rise again)

Rising

Seeing that the term "rising," or "risin'" is defined as a giant, painful zit that usually appears in some inconvienient place on the body (at least in the South), I would stay away from it. Your idea of Firebirds was a lot better, anyway ;).

DCU "Pops" Rising, 2-0

"In a very painful loss Satruday night..." :D

IMO it would be completely insignificant. I doubt that RSL has lost Barca fans. I doubt Houston has lost Lokomotiv fans (or whoever is a rival of Dinamo Kiev). I doubt NYRB has lost Wien fans (hard to get much lower, though).

LA is a wash, though, since if people hate Chivas, they have an alternative.

well, if you keep that in mind...i'd have to say Atlanta Rangers would have to be my favorite. One other tidbit that might make Rangers work is that Georgia is famous for being a protestant state.

my top ten list: (i'm not including Silverbacks)

1) Atlanta Rangers-already mentioned why it's my favorite.
2) Atlanta Lightning-no doubt Atlanta has a lot of lightning. Plus, the nickname could be Moonshiners!!!
3) Atlanta Locomotives-Has the "euro appeal" and would rival with Houston Dynamo with that in mind. Plus, Atlanta was famous for Locomtives, and it's a much better name than "Terminus."
4) Atlanta Outlaws-Sounds better than Moonshiners.
5) Atlanta Athletic(s)-eh. it's kind of blah, but if nothing else works...as long as it isn't "Atletico."
6) Atlanta Fire Birds/AFB South-i still like it a lot, but i could see it be confusing to some.
7) Atlanta Moonshiners-Moonshiners would probably be a good nickname to go with Atlanta Lightning.
8) Atlanta Legacy-use to be my favorite, but starting to fade.
9) Atlanta Rising-it's catchy.
10) Atlanta Pride-starting to fade on me.

Honorable Mention-Atlanta Aeros, Atlanta Chiefs, Atlanta Marauders, Atlanta Apollos, Atlanta Generals, Atlanta Jets, Atlanta Dragons, Atlanta Fury, Atlanta Imperials, Atlanta Spartans, Atlanta Olympic, Atlanta Bobcats, Resurgent Atlanta, Atlanta Hunters, Atlanta Vipers, Atlanta Crusaders (Remember that we're in the bible belt), Atlanta Knights, Atlanta Kings, Atlanta Colonials, Atlanta Rattlesnakes, Atlanta Goldminers, Atlanta Tornado, Atlanta Mountaineers, Georgia Infantrymen, Atlanta Cavalry, Atlanta Scouts, Atlanta Bombers, Atlanta Arsenal, Atlanta Academics, Atlanta Cherokee, Atlanta Foresters, Georgia Peniles (HA!), Southern United, Atlanta Diablos, Sporting Atlanta, and Southern Soccer Federation of Atlanta (SSF Atlanta)

To put my two cents in as far as names go for a possible Atlanta expansion team I vote for Terminus. I wasn't too big of a fan of it until I read up a little on the history of Atlanta and also a little Greek mythology. I think it would make a very cool and distinct name that stands out from the crowd.

This may sound silly at first but if an Atlanta team did take on a neutral name like Atlanta Southern, InterSouth Atlanta, Atlanta SC, etc., I rather like the unofficial nickname, "Good 'Ol Boys." Definitely southern, and I can think of plenty of fantastic songs that we could modify and sing at games...namely "Miss America Pie" or whatever the name of that classic is.

But then, they'd have to have uniforms that look like overalls somehow...:D

I still think the team name should have something to do with the city, and most Euro-knockoffs don't.
