He can shoot from the distance(freekick artist, etc). He can dribble. He can pass -- long & short. He can header the ball(or strong in the air). He can do some defending(help out in the midfield without embarassing himself).

I was going to say Di Stefano but I'm not sure about his defensive work.
My vote goes to Lothar Matthaeus. At his peak, he was great in going forward and he was no push over when he moved into defence. A great box-to-box player.

Beckenbauer surely.
Pele had every attacking attribute you could want, he could also play in goal, but his defending might be the only question.

Di Stefano could defend as well. he was used as defensive midfielder at one point. However, I don't know about his ability in the air. I saw him headering goal before, but he looked aweful. Same can be said about Mattaeus' ability in the air.

probably Beckenbauer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5QmsZH8TJw8). Scoring, assists, headers, defending, free kicks, Leadership, and even coaching, he could do everything.

Didi is right there with Beckenbauer-he even took Peru to QC 1/4 in 1970 as a coach. Lethal free kick, great on the ball, and could dominate/control the pace of a game with the greatest midfield generals of all time. Considering the "X-factor" that his free kicks would be, I might lean towards Didi. He was 5' 8", so I don't know what type of player he was in the air, but all things considered, you can make a strong case for Didi. By all accounts Beckenbauer's equal in controlling a match.

Obdulio Varela. I find it amazing how forgotten he is in soccer history. The man did everything for Uruguay in the late '40's and early '50's, the most complete player I've ever seen, and I've everyone.

I agree that it is between Pele and Beckenbauer. However, based on the definition provided (defending is secondary and attacking is primary) I would put Pele ahead.

beckenbauer
read the game attackingly or defensively, hence played a free role, was great at everything and had flair and skills on the ball to match anyone.
definitely better than matthaus vito.

Kid, I don't know whether they still do the "duck and cover" drills at your school, but you would be well-advised to assume the position, and I do mean NOW.
