Yep, while not ignoring them, there's no need to place such a high emphasis on converting the average Joe six-pack and bashers. I've always thought getting the soccer fans who are not into MLS would be enough. :)

MLS well-placed to maximize Beckham's arrival (http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story?id=445939&root=mls25&cc=5901)
...MLS deputy commissioner Ivan Gazidis says the league is poised to attract more hard-core soccer fans who dismiss MLS as second-rate.

"We believe that there are enough soccer fans in this country that if we can capture a bigger portion of that market, we would be extraordinarily successful," Gazidis said. "Our business is a soccer business and needs to be built on soccer fans.

Beckham is not a savior.

Other than a short-term buzz accompanied by an influx of crossover publicity, I can't imagine what MLS gains by importing Beckham. He'll sell tickets ... for a while. He'll sell shirts ... for a while.

But for Beckham to truly justify MLS's financial and emotional investment, he has to change the American sporting culture.

He can't.Nothing like setting the bar artificially high, so as to be able to predict, and then celebrate, failure where none actually exists.

The rest of that article is the same old, "soccer will never catch on in America" nonsense that the sports-media dinosaurs can't get enough of hearing themselves spew.
