Hi. Since Beckham, Blanco, Angel, Reyna, and Barros Schelotto have joined the MLS, and since I can watch HD games on HDNet and ESPN2HD, I have now develop an interest for the league. So can any knowledgeable fan help me with a couple of questions I have? Thanks in advance.

1. Assuming no injuries, what's DC United's ideal lineup?

2. List all your players who have international experience at any level (U20, U17, etc.)

Example: (for the Galaxy)
Donovan - USMNT
Albright - USMNT
Beckham - England NT
Pavon - Honduras NT
Buddle - US U23
Kirk - US U20

In retrospect I realize how bad an intro it was. I should've mentioned Emilio and Fred as well. My apologies. That's a nice ideal lineup you have there. Now, what would be DC United's ideal lineup with the current players they have?

It wasn't that. It was more that your post seemed a little like 'I didn't really care about MLS before, because the players weren't good enough to merit my attention; but now that MLS has a few decent players, I'll give it a chance.' That may not have been the message you wanted to send, and I may have been wildly misreading your post to sense some of that in there; but it seemed to be going that way to me. People who root passionately for a team generally don't like hearing stuff like that. This country has many soccer fans who won't give MLS the time of day because the standard of play isn't up to La Liga/EPL/Serie A/etc. They're right, it isn't; but that doesn't mean it isn't worth caring about, getting excited over, investing time in, etc. If that were true, nobody would ever go to Football League matches in England.

Personally, I don't give a rat's ass how people get into the league. As long as they do. If that makes me less of a fan, well, I'll take that burden in exchange for more people getting interested in the league.

Welcome, Guapo.

There was a time in the "glory years" (1996-99) when DC could field a side made up entirely of current senior international players, although it wasn't always our first choice side - that's how good we were, particularly by MLS standards back then.

Among the current group, we have:
Olsen - USMNT
Moreno - Bolivia NT
Carroll - USMNT
Boswell - USMNT
Vanney - USMNT
Gros - USMNT (1 cap)
Simms - USMNT (1 cap)
Namoff - USMNT (1 cap)
Arguez - US U-20s
Addlery - Jamaica U-20s

I think that's it. We just dropped Kasali Yinka Casal, who is currently in the Nigeria U-20 pool.

So there you go, Good Looking one. Plenty of reasons to choose DCU as your favorite side. Now pick a team other than "the winning one," which is probably annoying more folks than anything. If it's DCU, welcome aboard, if not, ...

Hopefully that's not Jay Nolly at keep? Admittedly I don't follow other leagues so there may be another Nolly I'm not aware of.
Other than that, your lineup looks passable.

Oh, my, a shade cranky today?

As I am writing from North Dakota, following DC United from this distance is pretty easy these days with satellite and all.

If you are new to MLS, you would be well served to look at the traditions and history of DC United. We have more league championships than any other side, we are the only ones with international hardware (CONCACAF cup, Intercontinental Cup), the loudest and most loyal fans, and the coolest unis in the league. We are the best known team internationally (with the possible exception of the Gals simply because they signed some lower class Brit, I forget the name).

PM me if you are anywhere near Fargo and watch a game with me.

I took the insertion of Jay Nolly into this lineup was his way of saying, "If you have those 10 players in front of the keeper, anyone can play in the net."

El Guapo, I noticed you have asked this question about every team in the league in their forum. No judgement, as I welcome any interest in the league. However, I'm curious as to what you are aiming to find out...are you going to pick a favorite team based on how many national team players are on each team or what? Just seems odd...

Yeah, very curious line of questioning. If it was preseason I'd say it was for MFLS but its far too late for any help with that at this point in the season.

"Club: The winning team"

hope that answers your question :D

Actually, it was more just to be silly. And to see if anyone would notice.

I took it as a test to see who was actually reading it and if they were indeed a "knowledgeable" fan.

I also laughed and laughed and laughed!

Thanks. Good to see most of your starting 11 are senior internationals. Surprised to see three of your main stars (Gomez, Emilio, and Fred) are not, but they're good nonetheless.

No. I'm just one of those people who can't follow a league unless I know most of its players, and have some background info about them. I do follow the EPL, La Liga, and Serie A, and I know most teams lineups and their players NT status. It's only fair I do the same for MLS. I'd be difficult for me to follow the MLS if I didn't know any of its players. I know I should've done this research myself, but I figure there's always somebody nice out there willing to talk about his/her favorite team.

One thing that has surprised me is the fact that most MLS teams are full of internationals, and is something non-MLS followers don't know about.

Thanks Monster.

Yeah, it's been kind of tough for Gomez to confince Argentina's coach he's better than Requelme,

And Emilio is only... well, I think he's sitting behind around 500 other Brazilian in line to take over when one of the many Brazilian strikers decide not to play in a tournament.

As for Fred... There's some rule in Brazil that you can only have one Fred on your national team. What can he do?

Well that is because we play so many inconsequential games that just about every MLS player of any quality gets at least one cap. Between the meaningless friendlies and qualifying against lesser sides (not recalling European players for these games to boost relationships between the USSF and the clubs), the United States has a lot of players come through the national team. Add to that the lowered demands from the press and fans so that the national team doesn't have to play every game as if it were the World Cup Final like many European sides (i.e. England, Italy, England, Germany, England, and England), and you end up with a whole slew of US "internationals"...

Very honest answer. But this whole slew of US "internationals" might be a good selling point to attract more non-MLS followers to the league.
