To get an honest answer if you had the players to do any formation what formation would you use? I would use 4-3-1-2. Solid flat 4 back with a strong midfield and good attacking options, requires a lot out of the side backs up and down the line.

If the players are so talented that they can play any formation, then by definition there is no "best formation" for that team. You pick a system to fit the players you have, the opponent you face, and the size of the pitch. In reality the formation used is not that important as long as the team is playing well together. A system of play is just a tool to help a team combine efficiently. The team that adapts its play to the circumstances the best usually wins regardless of the "formation" used.

That said, for counterattacking style I like 442. For high pressure/direct play I like a 433. For a small field, a 352.

As for a 4312, 4 backs & 3 defensive midfielders is too much of a bunker for my taste. I would only use something like that against a vastly superior opponent on a very large field. And then a 451 (withdrawing another forward) might make more sense.

Your players determine the formation.

Also a formation is merely a starting point.

What the team looks like on attack is different then what the same team looks like on defense.

If I had a hugh player pool which I had because we paid our players to play.

I used a 4-4-2
