Alright, I'm fairly new to soccer, unfortunately having only become interested in it when I hit 20 (now). I'm athletic, but am new to my area so I don't know of any places where I could take classes, or join a team (which wouldn't mind a brand new player on it). Does anyone know of a place, or something I could do to train and play? I've read multiple books, and watched videos (not to mention every game that I can), but I'll be the first to admit its completely different to read and watch a game, as opposed to play it... any advice?

Get a ball go to a empty hand ball court and try different things with the ball.
Nring the ball to the park and just dribble yhe ball at different speeds using all parts of the foot.
Look up but keep the ball at the bottom of your line of vision and dribble towards things you see and away from things you see.
Whike dribbling look for something you can use as a target representint the goal and try to hit that target. Head down through the shot once you decide to shoot.
Move without the ball when you don;t have the ball. Before you receive the ball look for open space to put that pass on your first touch so you have time to start your dribble so you have time to pass and time to shoot if your in your distance.
Go to a field see people playing ask to join them. Be friendly and make new friends pick up women who play soccer :-)
Have fun and play it's a great game. To tired to run then walk always keep moving.

I registered on the boards hoping I'd find post similar to yours to give me some motivation in pursuing my newly found interest in soccer. I'm 20 year old also. Would be great if you lived over in Illinois! I'd have a partner to kick the ball around with!
I certainly wouldn't want to hijack your thread, SlimPanda but I'd like to welcome more advice geared towards people such as ourselves who are getting into the game at such an old age!

Hey, careful man... we're not old. Just not as young as we once were. Are you hoping to play for a school, or club team? (And who cares about 'taking over' the thread. To me, it just makes me feel relieved that I'm not the only one in this situation.) Maybe we could throw some training ideas off each other? What are you doing now to train? And as for kicking around the ball, same goes both ways. Let me know if you ever come towards NY.

As Big Guy said just get a ball, find a field, and go to town. I didn't even touch a ball until I was 19 and was "drug" into playing when I was in England. I got lucky though because my father in law is coach of an American Football team but they have goals set up for footie practice also, so everyday on my way home from work I stop at the field for an hour.
It's absolutely true when they say "practice makes perfect".
