Not in your usual pile of papers (not to mention their lack of soccer coverage in the first place), but it's a pretty good article, IMO. No bashing, no opinion. Just fact.

Beckham hoopla kicks in-Detroit News (http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070714/SPORTS07/707140346)

It's got some audio of conversations with Beckham, too, so it's got a little more than your usual article.

Seriously- soccer in this country just isn't going to work. It will always be "some other sport". 250 million for five years? Someone just threw a bunch of money down the drain.

You posting on a soccer message board is proving acquiring Beckham is paying off. People who don't normally follow soccer are paying attention. 27,000+ tickets already sold at Giants Stadium to see him play. I'd say this move is already paying off.

So, what brings you here? How did you find this site? When did you develop your love for soccer?

You really don't understand anything do you? You don't understand the fact that Beckham's contract has already been paid for with the increased merchandise, ticket, and advertising sales. You also don't understand that most of that contract isn't out of AEG's pockets. And you definitely don't understand the fact that David Beckham is the most recognizable and well known athlete in the entire world, including the US.

I try to be nice on BS, but man, you are just an absolute idiot.

Homes of their own - SI (from July 30, 2001) (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/soccer/mls/news/2001/07/30/stadium_future_sa/) That would be a fun tradition to start. Every so often, throw the headlines of 5 or 10 years ago out there.

This is especially apropriate, as that article describes entering the "second phase" of MLS, and we now enter the third phase.
