Well, I've never gone to a world cup before, so I have never really looked at ticket pricing and such.
So, for those with knowledge in this area, lets say I wanted to go to the final match, a semi match and maybe even a quarter final match.
Based on past experience and what you know on about the upcoming world cup, could anyone give me an expected price range for the tickets if I buy them when they are first available?

Tickets for the final and semi finals will be INCREDIBALLY difficult to get hold of. If you are lucky enough to get a ticket for the final at face value they varied between 120 and 600 Euros for the last world cup.
To say that the odds are against getting one and you'll need a hell of a lot of luck would be the biggest understatement of the year. If you were hoping to get one through a ticket tout expect to pay around 5,000 Euros.

So like, how does the distribution work out? I know a certain amount has to go to South African residents, but how are the rest distributed?

Based on past tournaments a (small) proportion will go to fans of the two finalists via the national associations, a (small) proportion will go to average fans via the FIFA website, a proportion will go to the media, a (large) proportion will go to sponsors and the rest will go to the "FIFA family".
The chances for getting one for the final are miniscule.

I guess the best hope of getting one is buying the '7 game' package for your home association, and then having you home association get to the final, right?
Do they even do 7 game packs? I remember looking into 6 game packs for the 2006 WC (didn't end up going .. spent money on getting married instead.)

Do they verify my home team or can I just put down whatever...because even though I live in the USA, I don't support the national team, they have no chance to make the final match, and I'm not really American.
How does buying it off the website work?

It varies from tournament to tournament.
You can though put down any national team you want though, be it Brazil or Kazhakstan. Then you just have to hope they get to the tournament and then get to the final.
The problem is that the big teams have large numbers applying, also you often have to apply for the tickets before you know what teams will be playing in the tournament.

for the last world cup, your 7 match team ticket got you to the final regardless of whether your team did or not. Your team did have to qualify though.
It may be a bit easier to get tickets in 2010 as it's hard to see too many of the locals being able to afford FIFA prices for too many games. Even with applicants from around the world last time, I think German applicants accounted for 80% or so of the total.
There will also be a lot less people applying from outside the host nation. South Africa isn't remotely near any nation that would expect to bring large support, which will drastically reduce numbers applying. The thousands of groups of young lads from England, for example, who possibly sacrifice a couple of weeks in Ibiza to go to Germany or Portugal instead, will not be able to afford to go.
While going to the final itself will still require a huge amount of luck in any lottery, I think fans who just want to go over and see some football and a bit of the country will have it much easier.

Do you guys know when you can start applying for tickets?
Also, anyone remember what the 7 game tickets package cost for '06?

Tickets will probably come out early-mid 2009.
Can't remember the 7 game package prices exactly, sorry.

I hope it is easier as it is starting to get ridiculous. The demand for the Euros has just been phenomenal.
Hopefully a lot of people will be put off by S Africa. Personally I can't work out the best strategy for the tournament.
In the past I have based myself in one city, and then in Germany just travelled constantly.
Will be something to think about as the dates come closer.

Exactly what website would I have to visit in order to buy the 7-game package?

FIFA.com handled all general ticketing in 2006 and probably will again. In December of 2009, each qualifying federation will have tickets given to them for each of their games and will distribute them how they wish, but the rest of the tickets for the general public will be through FIFA, including the TST's (Team specific tickets). Nothing will be offered until early 2009, though.
