Not really a Fan but lets say I have some amount of sympathy for them.
Rudi Bommer being their coach is one reaon for it, good experiences with some Duisburgfans due to our former fan-friendship is another one...
I do like their stadium. Its just maybe a little too big for them. Definitely a nice place to go for an awaygame tough!

i am a huge MSV-Fan.
i was born&raised in Duisburg and after a brief period in the United States (Indiana) i am back in my hometown.
i am quite shocked at the moment as MSV have just signed Ailton for the upcoming season.....

I guess I started liking the Zebras at the start of the 05-06 Bundesliga campaign. They were the first game of the season on TV when Fox Soccer Channel still carried a game in the morning on Saturdays. I lived for those mornings...A beer and bratwurst on the couch at 10:00 on a Saturday morning. My wife and I went to Germany over the Easter break (We are both teachers). My goal was to see at least one game. Fortunately we were staying in Koblenz and when they played RWE we had nothing to do so went. Koblenz was a great town, but the track in the stadium spaces the crowd a bit from the goals. However, we both had a good time enjoying the atmosphere. It was a great week...Every night that week pretty much had a German team on TV, eitehr playing in the Champions League or EUFA Cup, or League matches.
The otehr game I really wanted to get to was on Easter Sunday. My intended destination was Schalke because it always looks fun on the highlights. However, since they were at the top I felt we would not be able to get tickets for the game on that day and it would be a waste of a trip. Instead we decided to go to Duisburg, which was just as good for me.
On the DB on the way up from Koblenz I saw someone with a Duisburg scarf. I asked him if he was going to the game and he got really excited that we were from America and going all the way to se a game. He was really nice and our train got to Duisburg about 10 minutes before the match started. My German is not htat good so he helped us catch a cab to the Arena, even paid for it to! When we got there he also set us up with great tickets at the ticket booth. He explained they were expensive, I think 30 Euros each for midfeild about 10 rows off the pitch and in the afternoon sun. In my mind I was thinking that's about $40 which would get you nose bleeds in the rafters at any NY area team.
Needless to say we had a great day. The sun was shining, MSV trounced Offenbach 4-0, and my wife also became a fan.
The stadium is a little big, BUT it was Easter Sunday and the supporters section was packed as well as a quarter of the other areas.
If anyone ever has a week off in that April week, it would be a great time to go see German soccer. I could have seen a game every night between League, CL, and Uefa games.
Hoosier...are you an active supporter? The guy who helped us went to the supporters section and gave me his email address but it hasnt worked...

yes i am quite active i must say ;)
i think i average out at about 30 out of 34 games a season, home and away.
since we dont have that big of an active supporters scene chances are good that i actually know that person.
i am looking forward to the new season very much! we have a pretty good roster this year and i think chances are high that we dont get relegated again :D

What do you think about your new "diva" Tony Ailton, dear MSV fans?
I'm really curious how he'll get along in the modest MSV environment...

yes, i'm afraid i had to witness that game. that match was the second game of our 4 games losing streak as i recall. Nice stadium but the section for away supporters is, well, pretty outdated.

When there were rumors about Ailton joining MSV about 5 weeks ago i thought: "god, no, not that guy". after offering himself to us, he then started promoting himself for a contract at Rostock. what a prostitute :D
the signing of him yesterday hit me like a jackhammer. but i decided to be openminded about him. i just hope he will not cause too much trouble and repay us for giving him his last chance of playing on a bundesliga team.
today i went to see a "friendy" at our neighbours from Rot-Weiß Oberhausen (non-dramatic 2-1 win) where after some chants Ailton came to the stands and shook some hands. he got a LOT applause and i think most people here will recieve him well. i am told that MSV has sold 35 jerseys with his name between 16pm and 19pm today. i think that is an all time record here in Duisburg :D

Hoosier - I thought there were a lot of supporters at the game.
I am hoping to get back to Germany in April of 09..We are trying for some babies...
I think Markus Kurth was pretty good the game we saw.

HD..
The players really appreciated the fans. When we went, a few of teh players who made some big plays went to the supporters section and the crowd I guess called out Kurth and he climbed the fence and grabbed a bull horn to speak to the crowd. It was truly awesome to see hwo the fans appreciated the players and vice versa.

Ailton is maybe my favorite Brazilian player to play in the Bundesliga. :D
The "Ailton musse schiesse viele tore" "musse arbeite" "musse konzentrier" in almost every interview is classic. :D
I wish him the best comeback ever.

yesterday, MSV has scored an astonishing 2-1 win against Dutch champion and Champions-League team PSV Eindhoven! the game was our official (pre)season opener. Eindhoven lags behind just about 2 weeks in their season preperation, so obviously it is not clear how strong they really were... anyway, the zebras dominated the game mostly and were up for some nice plays. the season might just work out fine after all ;)
Here you can watch the highlights of the game (with dutch commentary ;) )

yea that has started to become a kind of tradition. after very important games or after the last game of the season the fans will demand for their MVP and whoever recieves the honor, will speak to the fans.
duisburg is a small time club (relatively) so the players do not have reason to be stuck up or acting all like a prima donna ;) i hope it will stay that way...

I personally think AIlton will turn out a really good signing for you guys. I predict he will scored atleast 15 goals as he is still, despite all the controversies, a very good striker. But if you get relegated, its hard to see him remaining with the club even if he cannot go anywhere better.
