So Arena calls out Landon, like he has done to Clint and various others, for their uninspired play. I have no problem with that, however my question is this, who else has he done this to?

Kirovski?
Jeff Agoos (remember those own goals in the cup)

Has anyone ever critisized Arena (players I mean)?
Do they fear him?
He has the power to not allow players on the team if he wants regardless of what the public wants, where does this power come from?

If Beckam were to get into a verbal battle with the England coach how long would the coach leave him off before the coach was sacked?

I don't see that happening in the current environment here in the USA.

Arena is dissapointed that Donovan wasn't really as motivated as he would like for this cup, I agree, however is it or is it not the coaches job to motivate players? I don't know the answer to that one.

The coach picks the players, and when they don't perform is he ulitmatly responsible?

Would Arena ever admit he was outcoached?

I think one of the reasons that Donovan was called out by Bruce is because he is as close as we have to untouchable when it comes to players for the US for the next 10 years. Thus, he is more open to public criticism because it doesn't jeopardize his standing on the team. This vs. someone like Kirovski who I'm sure, just like a lot of other players, has had private discussions with Arena about his future with the team. Publicly, he's in a more delicate situation because of the criticism he has faced.

I think Arena was right to call Donovan out right now, before WCQ and other matches that mean a whole lot more.

Arena is safe, for the most part, as long as the US succeeds in qualifying for the World Cup and getting past the first round. For the general public in the US, the US nats are on their radar only once every 4 years anyway. If he fails at WC 2006, then he will be questioned. I think he has carte blanche until then.

I don't know if I would call anyone untouchable who plays for the USA.

If Arena really didn't want to play Donovan, it would piss all of us off but we don't have any power to dictate who and who should not play.

Once again, this is not the UK, where a huge sportswriter would write a scathing review of Arena's coaching.

I agree though, donovan needed to hear it, but I also think that at some point Arena may run into a player who is willing to fire back.

In fact, isn't this what happened to that Hernandez guy, and has he ever been looked at again?
