Let me first qualify this post by saying that I NEVER watch SportsCenter. I DVR it and scan for soccer highlights and delete. I just can't stand it anymore. Soccerphobia aside, it's just way too much crap and not enough highlights. Tonight, I am giving it a shot, as there is litterally nothing but two international soccer tournaments being played tonight. Now, on to my wisdom.

Not that I'm surprised by this, but they're 20 minutes into the 1AM show ON THE SLOWEST SPORTS NIGHT ON THE AMERICAN SPORTING CALENDAR, with super highlights of two pretty important soccer games played only hours ago just sitting on the shelf. But we got our Triple-A all star game highlights in the first 10 minutes didn't we?

I have to chuckle to myself a little as I know all of the hater-heads are quietly running around the SC offices wondering what that annoying sound is that they can't get out of their heads. I know what it is, though, and so do you...

Those are the death bells, tolling for the old SportsCenter and for the biases and prejudices of guys like Stu, VanPelt and Cohn.

(Note in min 28 of SC: Mex-Arg highlights just rolled including a tease flashing back to last year's WC match-up. Pretty decent treatment of tonight's game, actually. Shocker. Still no sign of U-20 highlights.) Anyway...

With Becks' arrival, highlights of his games will get attention, and that's going to have a snowball effect. SC is going to be back on our radar soon, boys and girls.

I couldn't agree with you more. I haven't watched SC in years and if I do need to watch something important sports related I struggle with ESPN News. Is Staurt Scott still saying Booyah for all his highlights?

I stopped watching sportscenter when they started airing junky stories about some high school athlete who overcame some obstacle.

I only care about sports not the mushy stories. Also I just can't take the nascar/tennis/golf/spellingbee highlights

It's baseball. It's America. It's ESPN. ESPN caters to America. America wants baseball in the summer, football and basketball in the winter. Outside of the World Cup (all games live in HD in 2006) and an occasional Mexican match (two channels showing games against the US and something about a club game registering huge ratings), soccer barely registers a blip on the radar.

And as said here (http://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showpost.php?p=12131053&postcount=16), the minor league all-star game was written into the contract between MLB and ESPN.

If we (a few soccer fans) are complaining, imagine what MLB fans are doing. "You're showing this game tape delay? GHEEZ! They already know the score! It's a day game being aired at night! The fans are HOME from the game! I'm sure there's some Cal Ripken Jr. highlight show you could put on instead."

Meanwhile, there's several channels out there which show at least 80% soccer programming or more. Fox Soccer Report is a decent show. Granted, it's not made with ESPN-type dollars, but it is 60 minutes of straight soccer highlights.

And yes, ESPN News is the place to go for general sports highlights.

Except no highlights of Argentina v Mexico and USA v Uruguay since the Fox Soccer Report must be recorded fairly early in the evening.

What time did those games end? I always thought the 10 PM ET version was live (as it claims to be.)

Of course, they may not have the technical savvy to change their rundown during the show, like SportsCenter or other news programs do. They may have a rundown at 9:45 PM (or whatever time) and that's the one they're going with, no changes. It wouldn't surprise me.

If SC can change their rundown in a way like "Bonds may hit another home run during our show. We'll take you out there when he bats" and the FSR version may be something like "We have important live matches going on right now, we'll get you highlights as soon as we can", it wouldn't surprise me if they couldn't do that.

ESPN's ignorance of international soccer should be no surprise as their motto seems to be that if they don't cover an event, that event does not exist. I'm surprised they even had Mexico-Argentina in the show at all. They are well known for emphasizing and over-covering leagues and events they carry and ignoring most other events.

I don't think it's ignorance but an attitude. They show lots of highlights on their SportsCenters in other parts of the globe. I think they are just covering what they think are the stories of most interest to their American audience, as annoying as it is to soccer fans.

I get CNN International and BBC World on my FIOS system, and it is a pleasure to watch both their coverage of sports (or I guess I should say 'sport')
