Jaguar, and Panther both have Network settings already integrated into the OS. Jaguar includes a PPTP-based VPN client, which works well with Windows-managed remote networks, as well as standards-based networks.
When you add a Mac to a Windows-based network, your Mac can pretend to be a Windows machine to the other boxes on the network. That way, Windows users can connect to your Mac and use its shared folders without you needing to install any extra software. It's as simple as using the “Connect To” menu in the Finder.
Oh yes, and how sweet it is! Apple's SAMBA implementation is awesome!
But I was talking about adding or replacing a NIC to a box. Most Macs come with the 1000/100BaseT Ethernet soldered to the motherboard, so replacing one is non-trivial. But what about adding? I'm guessing, based on documentation I've seen, one simply runs a driver installer. Say five, six mouse clicks.

Oops, I misunderstood you. In that case you are correct, it's as simple as adding a driver if one is needed. I'm amazed at how many drivers are already isntalled on my mac and make it easy for me to plug things in to use.

How do you go about becoming certified by Apple?

And hold onto your wallet.
FWIW, I was certified back pre OS X and my employer paid for it.

Someday I'll have an employer who will be willing to pay for all of that.
I can dream, right?

This is really a safari question (and I feel dumb asking it). When I turned on my computer the other day, a message popped up saying that the beta version of Safari was going to expire in a few days. Do I need to download a new version?

YES!
Apple released the gold version of Safari a while ago. It's a lot better and more stable than the beta version.
BTW, I've been working on Panther for a while now and it's AWESOME. It is probably the best OS I've ever used. A lot of nice new features.

is the new version that much different than Jaguar?
Dante

It is and it isn't.
While many people won't see many differences looks wise, although there are a fair amount, people will definitely notice a difference speed wise. I've noticed A LOT of programs are quicker in Panther than in Jaguar. Not to mention a lot of the nice new features.
Check out www.apple.com/macosx/panther for more info on it

Sorry for asking but how do some of you already have Panther?

ACD, or some are in the Apple Seed program. Then there are those who just know how to "find" a copy.

Yep. I'm going to search around the office next week to see if there's a developer's copy lying around. My company's usually pretty good about getting the latest.
Speaking of things that cost money, is anyone else's .Mac renewal coming up? $100 is a big chunk of money but I'm 70% sure I'll re-up, considering I get all my personal emails on my mac.com account and I'm making decent use of iDisk. (and the free copy of the Sims is nice, and I know I will use the $20 discount from Apple's online store),

My .Mac account is up next month, but I've already renewed.
I get to choose a free game for my renewal
btw Skip, if you can't find a developers copy give me a holler. I might be able to get one for you.

Apple announces Bluetooth keyboard and mouse: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=77&ncid=77&e=3&u=/mc/20030916/tc_mc/appleintroducesbluetoothwirelesskeyboardandmouse
So they'll ship with the next round of iMacs and Power Macs, I assume.

They're available now in a number of Apple stores. Personally I don't like them. I have an Apple Pro Keyboard that I love and won't give it up for their new bluetooth keyboard. As for the mouse, total dissapointment. I was hoping for a two button mouse with a scrollwheel, but nope they stick with the one button mouse. Oh well, I'll just stick with what I have.

My roommate just took delivery of his dual 2ghz G5 machine this weekend. It is effin fantastic - blows my PC out of the water in terms of performance. Also cranks out SETI data units at the rate of 1 every 2 hours.
