Because neither of them were first team regulars for their club sides last season, Argentina has to much talent to pick from to justify picking non-first team players for their international squads.

That cant be the only reason, they are great players

Samuel didn't make the world cup squad and he has not been a first team regular for inter so it wasn't a surprise when he didn't make the squad. Towards the end of the La Liga season Saviola wasn't even making it to the subs bench for Barca, given the attacking talent Argentina have I just don't see how Basile could justify picking somone who was not playing first team football ahead of players such as Messi/D. Milito/Tevez/Palacio/Crespo.

I'm sure than once he is playing regular furst team football Saviola will be back in the squad, however I think Samuels days with the NT may be over. Then again, who would have thought Veron would ever make it back into the NT squad, let alone becoming a first team regular and lining up alongside Riquelme.

Well, I sincerely hope it's not Samuel...
We have much better options with Burdisso, Cata Diaz, Gonzalo, ...
As for el Conejito, he is class and deserves to be in this NT. It's just that he has been getting too little playtime, lately, so was probably not in his best shape. But I expect to see him during the WCQ.

well samuel isnt the youngest either, since we are talking about ayala's retirement. And i dont think he is the "wall" anymore. the guy has lost the solidity, his last game for argentina was living proof of that (emirates stadium vs brazil)

People talk about the players Brazil haven't taken to the Copa, such as Ronaldinho and Kaka, but there are many famous Argentines who didn't make the squad, for whatever reason.
Franco, Ustari, Zabaleta, Coloccini, Cufre, Sorin, Samuel, Gonzalo, Clemente Rodriguez, Demichelis, d'Alessandro, Maxi Rodriguez, Higuain, Aguero, Cruz, Saviola.

Ronaldinho, Kaka maybe important for Brazil but Saviola, Maxi are probably more important for Argentina! and Gonzalo as well! Ronaldinho has had a crapy season! so i wouldnt think he would have changed anything on their team anyways! their only loss was Kaka!

Honestly speaking, very few players in this list could contest a place in the current squad. Maxi, without a doubt, and Saviola. That's all, imho.

Maxi would have definately been in the squad but for his injury, Saviola would probably have been picked if he had seen more first team action. But having watched the under 20's the next superstar without a doubt is Aguero, who is going to be a rgular in the international team for a long time. The other player who has frrghtening ability is Banega, he needs to bulk up a bit but the talent he has is incredible.

There is so much Argentine talent coming through I could spend the rest of the day listing players. :D But of course the best of the lot, better than Messi/Aguero/Tevez/Mash, EVEN BETTER THAN MARADONA, is Zarate. ;)

22 players have been taken to the Copa, whereas in a World Cup, 23 are allowed. Of course Maxi would make the squad, completing the 23.
I believe Palacio was taken to the Copa because, in the absence of Maxi, he provides an option on the wings. With Maxi in the squad however, I would swap him with Aguero rather than Saviola. Let's face it, as a withdrawn striker, both Aguero and Saviola would be behind Messi and Tevez in the pecking order right now, but as the fifth striker and "wild card" option, I just think Aguero is more of a game-breaker and thus more likely to make an impact from the bench. What's more he's only going to get better as he's so young.

Here is a team comprised of players who aren't in the Copa squad, and who all play in Europe:
Franco; Cufre, Sorin, Gonzalo Rodriguez, Zabaleta; Demichelis, Maxi Rodriguez, D'alessandro; Higuain, Aguero, Saviola.
I wonder if Brazil have such strength in depth...?

Lets not forget you are talking about a WC squad in 2010, and Crespo will have freed up a slot for someone (maybe saviola), the question is whether or not we will find a dynamic system without a 9, or will we have to look out for more 9s for milito's sub. Lets face it, there is a lot of time to go, lets not start talking about the 2010 squad yet, qualifiers to come, sure thing there will be lots of experimentations then, and ofcourse there is the small matter of the final tommorow.
