Especially on the West Coast mainline those trains run on from Manchester to London. They have been upgrading the tracks to run the Pendolinos at 140mph, and the trains are either diverted (puts another two hours on the journey going through the Potteries) or have a replacement bus service (don't go there with how long that takes...)

Frank, just a quickie but I would advise you to look at BA or BMI to fly from Manchester to London on the Sat or rent a car. Travelling by train to get you back for Midday is really going to be pushing it on a weekend. Our trains at the weekend are dreadful.
Thanks for the tips. The match is in Lincoln and Lincoln doesn't appear to be close to Manchester, though. According to a National Rail search (albeit done for September 8, a different saturday), there looked to be 3 or 4 departures that would get me to London in time even with the early kickoff. There's a 550 that gets to King's Cross at 8:40 and a 6:50 that gets to King's Cross at 9:18. Those are GNER trains.

Oh, I know, I'm not a leave it to chance sorta guy, but I think Rick might have just been confused as to the place of the match. I'm not going to risk missing the Arse-ManUre match to see Lincoln City v. Chester....

Nope, I know you said Lincoln. You are right, the service is run by GNER and not Virgin but you will find that on weekends for most GNER services there are bus replacement services for part of the way. As Arron said you have to add in 2 hours extra for this. I would just be careful. Hiring a car is easy if you find someone else wanting to go and there are enough people going to Man U!! It's straight up the A1 and would take 3 hours max. Re Manchester thats how I would do it if I had to be back for a midday game. Or from Manchester take the Midland Mainline. In fact you can even take the Midland Mainline from Sheffield which is very cheap and goes to Kings Cross St Pancras. That line is the only train line I would use for long distance if you hav to get to a midday kick off.

The problem that I run into is that the Lincoln Chester match is Friday NIGHT, which is too late to get a train to anywhere after the match. The Lincoln-London via Sheffield is listed as 4 hours minimum. Lincoln-London (with a change in Newark) is 3 hours maximum. So, even with a bus replacement service, leaving at 555a gives me 5+ hours to get to the Tavern. I'm not sure i want to be driving for the first time in a panic to get to the match. But who knows.
anyway, if anyone going over for ManU feels like taking in the Lincoln City match the night before, feel free to pm me!

FRANK: I can get tickets for West Ham. If the game IS confirmed for 4th Nov. then let me know and I'll make the arrangements. Also, how many do you want?

Wow, Jeff, thanks. The game's already been moved for television, so I don't think it'd be rescheduled, but I guess there's always that chance. I just need the one.
Again, thanks!

Think I found a workable solution. A friend has offered to pick me up from the Doncaster station on Friday, go to the Lincoln City match Friday night, then bring me back to Doncaster (more trains than Sheffield) early Saturday morning. That should give me plenty of time and options that Saturday. He's also the sort of guy who would drive me as far south as I needed to go to get to a point where I could catch a ride, a bus or a working train to get to the Arsenal match. So I don't have to worry about catching a train from Lincoln nor do I have to pay for a hotel night Friday night! Woo hoo!

slightly off topic....but are Everton tickets hard to get? I'm going to be traveling the UK in the last week of August with my brother, and thought maybe a Prem game with good atmosphere would be something cool to show my brother. The game in question is v. Blackburn, but I'm obviously none too aware of what their ticketing situation is like.

I've not researched it, but you might try their website, see if there's a membership scheme, poke around Everton message boards, etc.

Their website is evertonfc.com - nothing about Prem tickets at the moment though.
