View Full Version : DeRo re-ups - impact for Gomez

Houston was re-signed DeRo for what appears to me to be a bargain $325k. However, I think this is newsworthy in what it means for Gomez. I think DeRo and Gomez are pretty similar in terms of impact on their clubs. Now, rumor was DC offered Gomez $300k before the season and he rejected it. With DeRo now setting the bar at $325k (and being younger than Gomez) does this impact Gomez's thinking on salary demands?
I mean I know its not like DC is competing with Houston for Gomez's signature - but I think it is a worthwhile comparison.

I wonder, how likely is it that this is actually the figure he's getting paid? I'm no expert, but I seem to remember that there were some players (Landycakes? Chivas players?) who were "officially" getting one level of pay but in fact really getting more. I would have thought that with the DP rule in effect the league would stop winking at such practices, but then again, it's MLS so who really knows.
Anyway, the point being, I could imagine DeRo and Houston having a conversation very much like the Gomez/United conversation: player wants more than $325, but the team doesn't want to tie up the DP spot. So the conspiracy theorists' answer is that Houston would have an incentive to list DeRo at $325 but pay him more under the table.

This comes off the MLS Players Union website which lists what they are actually getting paid - so for example Landon is listed at $900k.

The great thing about conspiracy theories is that waving your arms and yelling, "there is no conspiracy!" does very little to dispel them. ;)
OK, enough of my idle musings about the willingness of Houston's FO to abuse league policies.
I wonder if Gomez just doesn't want to keep playing here. Hasn't he said he wants to play out the end of his career back at Nuevo Chicago? Especially if Jaime retires after this season, I could see him deciding that now's the time to go home.

Yes, but there's no getting around the millions Landon is getting in psychic income (as the economists put it) just from knowing he's cradled in the loving arms of all American soccer fans.

Are you implying that Donovan is a psychopath?

No, just that Landon doesn't need money to be happy. He just needs to feel that he's loved.

In that case, he should NEVER play in DC again. :)

I'd love to see him traded here just to count the number of heads that would explode!

Is that more or less than the numbers of exploded heads if Dema went to Dallas?

Man, you are diabolical, aren't you? There definitely wouldn't be any more DC United board! The DC area 911 center would collapse under the deluge of calls because it would be a disaster of biblical proportions!

My All-time DC Hate team. I would have no trouble at all getting wound up to face this group.
DeAvila
Lisi---Martino---Landon---Quaranta---Cobi
Pena---CJ---Heaps
Hartman
First off the bench: Jake Dancey.
I'm sure there are other, equally worthy, players who might have been selected. These just came to mind immediately.

I don't know how you left Diego Serna or Carlos Ruiz off that list.

Memory is one of the first things to go...
Serna definitely, but I wouldn't have put Ruiz on that list. I actually like how he plays, and at his best he would have been awesome for us.

Hartman as your most hated goalie? Even more than Zach Thornton, whose assault on Jaime (who was merely going to pick the ball out of the net after a goal was scored) was among the most vicious things I have ever seen in professional sports?
I have no love for Hartman, but I don't hate him. After the embarassment he suffered at the hands of Roy Lassiter and Ben Olsen in the dying moments of the first half of MLS Cup 99, I really only have pity for him.

Meh. They shook hands later, so I have trouble believing it had any lasting effect.

I don't see how Hartman makes the list over Fat Tony.
