Mine is Carlos Llamosa's story. He gave up soccer to move to the US and became a janitor in WTC. Slowly, he worked his way back to professional football and ended up with the USMNT.
I'm pretty sure all American internationals
started out as janitors.
I have to say the David Beckham saga is pretty good ... nearly dropped by Cappello at Madrid and fights his way back to win La Liga and recalled to the ENGLAND Team.
Yeah, because he won La Liga by himself.
I can't wait for the book and movie.
One of my favorites is 1992 Euro Cup. Denmark gets called in to replace Yugoslavia after failing to qualify and then overcomes England and France in the group stage, gets past Holland in the semifinals, and then defeats the defending World Cup Champions Germany to win the tournament!
Because Yugoslavia was a war-torn region,
failures were rewarded with a berth.
I'm touched.
Crespo could not go to his High school graduation party because he had to practice with River Plate. He was give the go-ahead to make his debut. That night, the disco where the party was held got fire. Some of Crespo's classmates were killed.
Crespo's classmates being burnt alive.
Truly heartwarming.

Before the 1986 WC Finals, the team was split into two camps -- one headed by the fun-loving Maradona and the other by the not non-sense Passarella. According to Maradona's autobiography, both sides of the camps had a showdown meeting with Carlos Bilardo. Passarella accused Maradona and his buddies were using recreational drugs during training camp. Maradona admitted to be a drug user, but not during the training camp. Maradona then countered by saying that Passarella was screwing the wife of another Argentinian players. At that point, players who sided Passarella switched sides and Passarella was forced to step astep.I bet Pele wouldn't have the balls to do that.

Oh yeah, the Maracanazo of 1950 was a shock. Overcame a Brazil intent with winning outright, believed they deserved to win the cup, but got silenced in a way that made the whole country break down in tears!!!! what a upset.

1958 13 year old Franz Beckenbauer and some teammates planned to go to munichs biggest club in the next season, TSV 1860 München, as their small neighborhood club had no teams for elder players.
In one of the last games they played against 1860, and Beckenbauer was slapped in the face by one of their players.
That was the reason for him and his friends, to go to the much smaller munich club: FC Bayern München.
In 50 years as player, captain, manager and president of the club, he made Bayern to one of the biggest and richest football clubs in the world, while 1860 now plays second league, had even several years in 3rd league and is almost bancrupt.

Sorry, was lazy and ran it through babelfish, but I assume one gets the gist...:)
Keeper Eddy Treytel shot on 15 November 1970 during the game Sparta-Feyenoord a gull from the air. Halfway second half Treytel with a high goal kick hit the gull somewhere above the centre of the pitch. The referee, Bogaerts, paused the game to let remove the animal of the field. Theo Laseroms thanked for the honour, therefore assistant Hans Eykenbroek had come at just the inanimate throw bird behind an advertisement board. Goalie Eddy Treytel took along the animal to house and some days later the animal was set up and placed in the price cupboard of Feyenoord. This very against the wishes of animal protection. The animal stands in the feyenoord museum home now exhibited or History. Sparta Rotterdam tries the gull leave places to Sparta-museum. The game of 15 November finished with 1-1.
Every few years Sparta is trying to claim the bird from Feyenoord, as, of course, it was shot down from the air above "Het Kasteel", i.e. the stadium of Sparta. Feyenoord, however, claims the bird is theirs because it was shot down by the Feyenoord goalkeeper, Eddie Treytel.
