Juninho has turned down the captaincy for next year, so Perrin has to choose a new one. On the club website (http://www.olweb.fr/index.php?lng=fr&a=33939&pid=101002), he mentioned a few possibilities: Cris, Squillaci, Govou, Muller, and Toulalan.

What Juni said:

There are captains without armbands in the team. For example, Greg Coupet is a good captain and would carry the armband well. I was already a captain before having the armband and will remain one without it. A big team has several captains.

What Perrin said:

I won't make Coupet the captain because I prefer a field player, someone in the middle of the action who is among the players on the field. We need to discuss it between us before making a decision. First of all, I want to explain to the players how I see a captain and what values the arm-band represents. Generally, coaches prefer technical leaders, like Juninho. But we can also be led by a warrior, someone emotional, someone confident. In any case, we have choices but not 50 candidates. Squillaci could make a good captain, Govou also if he could gain on the field. Toulalan is missing just a little charisma, Muller was already captain and would carry the armband well, and Cris is also a possibility...

Against Lille on Sunday, Coupet will wear the armband until Perrin names his choice next week.

I think, in all fairness, it should be Govou because he's been there since this dynasty began. Toulalan I wouldn't consider as a result.

Squillaci and Toulalan have only been here for a season. They should wait for their turn.

I would say it's Cris.

Idiot Perrin. Coupet would be the perfect captain. Oliver Kahn was a great captain for his team.

I also think it will be Cris. This gives it away:

But we can also be led by a warrior, someone emotional, someone confident.

Squillaci hasn't been here long enough, but he's someone I'd like to see as captain eventually. Coupet would be a good choice as he's been at Lyon the longest, but I kind of see Perrin's point - it'll be awkward for him to run out of the box anytime there's a situation that needs his attention, and Coupet is no Kahn.

Toulalan is too new and too timid, at least right now. Muller can't be a captain from the bench, and same with Govou, who will have to fight with Keita for a place and is kind of flaky anyway.

I would prefer Juni though, and I hope that he changes his mind. He had a bad time in 2007, with too much pressure placed on his shoulders, but so did the entire team. I think maybe the Govou incident put a damper on his spirits, but short of putting Aulas on the field, I can't imagine anyone else who represents Lyon more than Juninho at this moment. He's not only our most visible, well known, and respected player, but all the other players worship him.

Inara, I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment. No sense in naming a captain who isn't guaranteed to be in the starting eleven (eliminating govou and muller from contention). Toto and Toulalan both have captain potential..but in the future. They don't bleed Lyonnais...yet. Cris is the obvious choice as a replacement: a natural leader, at times our best player and one of our most consistent, and most importantly, the epitome of awesome. That does not change the fact that Juninho is the face and the heart of our club and should be marshalling the side for the next season. The pouting needs to stop. Sid doesnt like you. Get over it.

Muller?:confused:it wouldn't be right to give a list of potential captains without including everyone who's already worn the armband, and müller did for a decent stretch. the same for govou: he's a possible captain but not a unifying choice, perrin only named him out of politeness.
i agree GK's aren't ideal, but greg is the only good choice until juni changes his mind (his teammates might talk him into it) or toulalan steps up, which could be in only a handful of matches.

Muller wore the armband for the friendly against Lille. It was nice to see him as captain again. But he's obviously not a permanent choice.

Coupet would be a good choice too, but he also declined the offer (I'll dig up the link) saying that he doesn't like leaving the goal and would prefer to be a vice captain or just a plain leader.

I would hate to see Govou as captain. He doesn't give off the slightest hint of leadership capabilities. If it has to be a field player 1. Cris, 2. Toulalan

funny, cris is my main man, and i wear his jersey to gerland, but i can't see him as captain... unless his french has radically improved in the last 6 months.
