when i watched him play andy roddick i thought he could make it to #1, but man did he get crushed by Federer.

Well, he played him the day after. We got a fresh Federer (his opponent withdrew from the previous round iirc) and a Gasquet who just played a 5 set game against Roddick. What to expect ?

A fresh Richard against an exhausted Roger might have provided more suspense, surely...
