A few interesting items in this game. At one point (early second half, I believe), there is an off-the-ball incident (probablly language) and the ref took big exception. He ran 20 yds from the flank to top of the arc of PA, and gestured for a player to come to him to be recognized for receiving a YC. The player declined the invite. Ref repeated the gesture, again, again. The player never stepped forward. Ref gave up and held up the YC. YC was never announced on the television by captions (I don't speak Spanish; commentators probably said something). Seems to me that the ref, who had been so insistent about stepping forward, should have given a second yellow?? Never seen that "failure to respond" before.
As the game progressed, a lot of time-wasting occurred. Eventually, the keeper was ejected for a second YC for time wasting. All subs had already been used. Needless to say, this set off Colombia and, by the clock, they wasted an additional 2 min 45 sec while jerseys were changed and players bitched. So, there were 4 min added time by the ref. That was not right. Colombia was really being pressed hard by the US and got just what it wanted. IMHO, should have been 6 min at the very least (both teams used all subs plus the several instances of time wasting), and 8 min would not have been outrageous.

I agree with you 100% of the way. This referee did such a great job for the first...about...84 mins. After that, he let the match slip away. First, the goalkeeper send off. Im not saying he was wrong, but i am saying that he let the players waste too much time. He should have told the goalkeeper to get off the pitch NOW and to replace him. He missed one very crucial call against Columbia in the 89th minute where a USA player was tackled recklessly and with excessive force. He didnt add enough time. With the goalkeeping fiasco, injuries, substitution, there should have been no less than 6 minutes added to the match time.

The end really was an odd sequence.
40:45 -- U.S. scores goal that is called back due to offside
41:25 -- Keeper is still tying his shoe or doing something with his sock or shoe, and he is then shown throwing up his arms in protest as he has apparently offscreen been issued the second yellow -- protests and outrage follow for several minutes as the Keeper refuses to leave the field and Colombia makes a tactical substitution as a result of the red card
45:24 -- ball is finally put back in play
Seriously, there was over 4 minutes of stoppage to be added based on this incident alone. And, I actually would have expected him to round up if anything, as the issuance of the second yellow suggests that he recognizes the time-wasting and is stepping in to do something about it. To issue the card, but then allow even more time to be wasted in this manner went beyond odd in my book. (In fairness to the CR, while he signalled for 4 minutes, he actually allowed 5 additional minutes, but still far less than seemed warranted given this lengthy stoppage).

By my observation, it's a rare situation indeed for time wasting not to pay off, at least in the match in which it happens. If Colombia had another match, it would have to pay a price, but it surely was to their advantage in this match and that's normal I think. It's rare indeed for time wasting to result in more than 50% of being paid back via stoppage time.

Not enough added time, that's for sure... my comment is on the penalty save though. I didn't watch the game, only saw highlights on YouTube, but the US defender who cleared the ball away after the save is 5 yards into the box before the ball is struck.... that one should have been retaken.

There were six substitutions; therefore along with the 4 minutes of time wasting on the send off and the substitutions 7 minutes of stoppage time should have been added to the second half. That said, even though the USA got short changed of two minutes these guys could not shoot the ball through the hanger opening for a 747.

I agree. I noticed the significant encroachment as well and watched for it again on the replays. The defender beat a Colombian attacker to the rebound by about 1 step, so I don't know that it could be classified as "trifling" in any way on that one.

But would the Colombian attacker have been encroaching as well?

Could have been -- I honestly didn't see whether he was or wasn't. But the result is the same because Law 14 says that the kick is retaken when players from both teams encroach.
