I'm sure this is fast becoming old news, but FCD's got Denilson now: http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=456121&cc=5901 Projected first start -- 1 Sept vs DCU

I can't get your link to work ...

The gist of Allen Hopkins' article on soccernet:

"The on again, off again agreement between FC Dallas and Brazilian World Cup winner Denilson is back on and finally for good.

Sources told ESPN.com that FC Dallas has finally agreed to a deal with the 29 year-old midfielder. The club is very hopeful Denilson will be available for his MLS debut Sept. 1 vs. D.C. United and for FC Dallas' U.S. Open Cup semifinal on Sept. 4 at the Seattle Sounders.

...

The source also confirmed the major sticking point between the two sides was not the overall financial value of the offer but rather the length of years of the contract.

Denilson arrived back in Dallas Wednesday for the second time since beginning talks with the club earlier this summer. This time he had his team of lawyers and advisors in tow to sign the contract. "

So who is FCD going to waive in order to fit him in? They need to move one SI before he can join.

Saragosa is the rumor - but Serioux has been injured so much of the year it could very well be him as well.

And we just promoted Burch to the senior roster to fill our last spot. Not that he hasn't earned it, but will we regret not having a roster spot open if Serioux becomes available?

I don't think so - I mean we are talking about a guy who has only played 176 minutes this year and is out with a hamstring issue.

Not really. We can always demote someone to developmental should we need the roster spot. I think that's what will happen given Goff's post about a potential trade taking place sometime in September. Even if Serioux is dinged up, I would still take him in hopes of him being healthy by the final stretch or next year.

What exactly do we need Serioux for?

With the emergence of the McTavish - Vanney combo in the middle, we already have Boswell on the bench.

As for D mid, I think Simms has earned a starting spot there, and we still have an experienced Carroll for depth.

The only way it would make sense is if Carroll or Vanney get traded perhaps for another winger or a striker.

I tend to think short-term and long-term.

Short-term, Serioux provides depth in two positions (d-mid and CB) and provides an aerial threat on set plays. He also is more aggressive than anyone on our roster and provides "bite" and protection for our skill players. While it would be ideal if our defense continues to play well, one injury puts us in a large hole, as does players underperforming over the course of the next few months. I'd rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Long-term, Serioux becomes a starting option and makes either Vanney or Carroll expendable. DC is not big on paying a lot for bench players, and one or the other is doing so currently. Serioux is a lot less expensive than either and capable of playing either position better. He's not that old and has the ability to play in this league for a while.

Unless there is some other team looking to shed an SI (Chicago has Thiago, so that coould happen), the only other option is that DC sits on its last SI and leaves a roster spot open until next season. Call me crazy, but that seems like a waste.

I hear you, but let me counter. I am thinking almost entirely short term, because I want to see us do everything possible to win something this year.

With that said, I don't think central defense or central midfield should be a priority. We already have Vanney and Carroll as cover in case of injury.

A pressing need is still a winger, especially with Gros's future in question, and Fred and Olsen are not long term solutions for the wing either.

Another need is striker. This may be Moreno's last year, and Kpene and Addlery have not proven to be consistant starters.

I'm thinking long-term. He'd be an option in the off-season instead of keeping the expensive Vanney and he's insurance if Boswell splits on us rather than re-signing. Even if he gives us nothing this year, I'd rather have his rights going into the offseason than have the roster spot empty - the empty roster spot wasn't doing us any good.

Anyway, It was only a hypothetical situation... I think the whole thing's moot now, because you can't demote Burch back down to bring another guy in without it turning into a locker room drama, which would be a price too high to pay for anyone not married to a spice girl.

Who said it had to be Burch? Kpene hasn't been seeing much time recently and would be an ideal candidate to be demoted, especially if he has any nagging injuries.

My other hypothetical was Thiago, but I'm not overly excited about him. We need offense off the bench, but he has looked like crap this year.

I know there are other areas we need help in. However, we have to look at who's available and from what teams. FCD and Chicago have to move SIs, so what names they have available form the only list of names I'm looking at. Outside of Guerrero or Segares, there really aren't any outside SI players from either team that I would be interested in. If you want offense, there's Thiago. If you want defense, there's Serioux or Saragosa. Of those, Serioux is the only name that I would really want to take a gamble on, as he's a player I've admired since last year.

Chivas up 2-0 in the 75th. I find it hard to root for any team that has the words "Chivas" in its name but its worth it to see the Gals embarrass themselves at home on national tv.

I'm impressed with Beckham going 180 minutes in consecutive days on a bad ankle though.

I'm impressed with his stupidity.

Serious limping at the end of that game. I suspect he's gonna be recovering for a while.

I really don't mind Chivas. I think it's in part because they're newer so I have fewer things to hate about them, but they play a decent style and I respect what Bradley and Preki have done with the team. Guys like Galindo, Bornstein, and Mendoza are such a refreshing change of pace compared to the twats who have played in a Galaxy uniform for years.

Plus, stomping the shit out of the Galaxy makes a team much easier to like. I wonder if my seat at MLS Cup 07 will be anywhere near David Beckhams?
