So I am watching Mexico vs. Chile in Copa America action and I don't understand a word of Spanish, but doesn't really matter. Then it struck me that recently Graham Poll retired and did interviews with the BBC and he was quite articulate. Some referees I know are also instructors. Some are educators. Why don't we see a retired referee - with obvious distinction - be a commentator? I think that would be great - a play-by-play guy, a former player who adds to the color commentaries, and then a former referee who can de-mystify some of the things going on.

Now, of course I am not sure if anyone would do this, but it would really enhance the viewing experience, don't you think?

Does anyone know of former referees doing this right now?

Former Swiss referee Urs Meier works for a German television station (ZDF). ZDF broadcasts games of the German national soccer team. ZDF has only one single live-commentator during the game, so Meier speaks only before and after the game and at half-time.

IMO, he is only partially helpful. Sometimes he tries to defend the undefendable ;-). I suppose he would be more neutral if he would break with FIFA/UEFA.
