Should we go all out for the win, or play it smart and rest some players?
Right now it looks like this for the second round:
If we beat Paraguay, we play Peru in the second round.
If we don't win against Paraguay, the following can happen:
a)If Mexico doesn't lose, or if Brazil doesn't win, we play Mexico.
b)If Brazil wins and Mexico loses, we'd play whoever wins the tiebreaker between Mexico and Brazil. Right now Mexico is ahead by two goals, so a one goal win by Brazil and a one goal loss by Mexico would mean we may still play Mexico, depending on who has more total goals. If Brazil wins by more than a goal and/or Mexico loses by more than a goal, we play Brazil.

Not hard to answer. It's better to avoid both Brazil and Mexico. Go all out for the win.

With the depth we have, we can both go for the win and rest some players. Time for Aimar, Tevez, Cata Diaz, Palacio and all. Put in Messi and a few sparks at the end.

agree, we can still rest players and go all out to win, and I think we should do that. To be perfectly honest, I wouldnt make too many changes from our 1st choice defence and defensive midfield, reason being, Paraguay will play on the counter no doubt, we might as well put our backline to the test from now on. Because realistically, the Mexicos and the Brasils are all gonna use the same tactic against us in later rounds, so why not start preparing with this low pressure game?
However, I think Milito is suspended, I could be wrong, but did he not pick up a yellow card in each of the last 2 games? If he is, I would play Burdisso there, although I am not sure I know Cata Diaz well enough to comment about him.

I think Messi should be rested against Paraguay, I've got a feeling the mighty Mash is going to be rested for this game so I'd like to see Gago get a game.
Like I said before (and I hope I'm not going to regret saying this  ) I'm not bothered who we play in the next round as Argentina should not be frightened of anyone.

Yeah i think Milito did pick up two yellows, no loss the way he has played so far.

Hopefully Veron gets significant playing time against Paraguay, so that he is too tired to play in the knockout round.

you know I dont want to disrespect cambiasso too much but I think he has been average this Copa and veron in his last prformance did do some good things and worked his but off.

Well i have just heard from that estudio futbol show that it will be a suplente affair now the left back the 3 position heinze has to play cause we can only bring 22......Now I heard its gonna be a 4-3-3 formation. Tevez, Milito, Palacio...up front ......in the middle Aimar, Gago, Lucho. the back...Heinze, Cata, Burdisso, Ibarra...Keeper I think might be Orion......Diagram this for me then tell me how you do it.

ok we need to win. so we can avoid mexico/brazil and play peru. which is ************ team as demonstrated in their game vs bolivia. This way we also sent paraguay at the winner of group B, make brazil/mexico attack a brick wall in playoff, not a bad thing.
to win against a negative football team obviously isn't going to be easy. this paraguay team is build around the negative football doctrine, we have to watch out for counter attacks, and it shouldn't be done just by individual skills, should be taken cared of at formation level. So i don't like 4-3-1-2 against these guys. defense pull up too much, leaving too much room behind.
my opinion is to play 4-2-4 (http://albicelestesforever.blogspot.com/2007/07/how-to-play-king-of-negative-football.html), despite it leads off from our 5:5 doctrine. we have the ppl to do it, and it can conserve our starters.
celtic fc beat the negative inter milan back in late 60s with this. and that was like the most remarkable success of using offensive football to beat negative football. usually teams just go to negative and hope it grinds itself out, like this year's FA cup final....
So, this lineup (http://bp3.blogger.com/_r-wrhuVqNwk/RowJuxL6UHI/AAAAAAAAAJM/3Wzk7Tkulj4/s1600-h/ranger.jpg)IMO. Or i guess we can always go to 4-2-3-1 and get a draw out of it....

I like that line up, take out Pato however, and Lucho put Ibarra in RB and Zanetti in Luchos spot, I think that could be interesting.

it's not 5:5 like we usually play. but it's probably little safer than playing 4-3-1-2.
carrizo for pato and ibarra rest zanetti are both acceptable options. depend on how much we want to win. after all against mexico isn't too bad. they are fatigued and not at 100% anyway.

Why not? I wouldnt mind playing any team at anytime, to be the best you have to beat any team that gets in your way. If we play Brazil in quarters then thats what it has to be.
Its better to play them early then in the final where they could have found their play and have momentum on their side.
Either way Argentina has by far a squad and a half and theres no excuses not to be champions.

brazil's best outcome now is 2nd place in group B. not going to meet argentina in quarter final either way.

I know we are not playing Brazil, looks like it will be Peru if we do get the the first spot in our group. But I was just saying if it would have been Brazil, that would have been just as good. ;)
