I had the opposite deal. I recerted in July, and got mine in January. I'm not sure why they do that, to be honest, I guess it has to do with lining up the calendar year with soccer year or something, who knows? It's just a bit of an annoyance.

National is never in a hurry. I turned all my re-cert paper work in on 2/28, to the State, week later got my "pink" copy and my State badge. I received my "card" from national the 3rd week of June. For 1/1/07 to 12/31/07. If you work only in your own state "no problem". IF you want to go out of State to Disney or some other "BIG showcase tournament" you need to complete all your re-cert requirements by 9/1 of each year to have any hope of having your "Registration Card" in hand and you records updated on the US Soccer computer by 1/1/new year.
You may "begin" completion of requirements, Advance Clinic, Physical test, Field assessment Starting 1 Aug each year for the following "Calendar" year.
FYI if you are upgrading instead of re-certing, you can complete all requirements and upgrade with only a $5 charge, to change your status in your current year.

Has anybody ever needed their registration card?
I either throw them away or bury them in my desk!

I use it to get into all the cool referee parties!

IF you want referee at Disney in the tournaments that runs from Christmas thrugh 1st weekend in Jan. If you are from out of state you have to fax a copy of the registration card showing the correct "new" year date. Without the "new" registration card you will not be assigned.
Other than that 1 tournament I have never been "required" to show my USSF ID card. I have found that if I attend an our of state tournament with my Son's team and I want to referee a few games for an assignor that does not know me, showing the card with the grade imprinted on it does seem to "ease" the assignors mind that I am the grade I say I am.

I guess the previous post is the reason to need the card....out of state work..
C'mon, though. Aren't we actually paying for the priviledge of being certified? And our fees should be enough to pay for the paperwork to be processed...

I'll be honest, what still perturbs me to no end is that they can't send out position papers via email to EVERY referee registered with them. Why only send it to Nationals and (I think) States?

Nope, State Referees aren't on the distribution list!
I suppose it would be a logistical challenge to email the position papers to 140,000+ referees. Sometimes it takes a few days, but they do post all the position papers on the website.

Nyaa, spammers do it all the time. ;-)
I've been asked for my registration card at two tournaments: USA Cup asks for it, but will take a badge with the current year in the absence of a current card (although I've always sent my old card to prove I was the grade I said I was). Regionals has also asked me for my card - they made a special check when it was an old card, but it also seemed very routine to the staff.

Exactly, spammers are good at this :). It's all well and good that they post them to the website, but do you really think even 10% of the referees out there ever check the website? Again, at my job, any changes to corporate policy is emailed to us at least once; or at the very minimum a note to go check the HR website is emailed to us. Why USSF can't figure out a system to do this is beyond me. Sorry this is a bit off the registration card path, but I think this just goes to show the poor administrative capacity of USSF as a whole.

I think the whole concept of the position papers on the website is poor too. No chronological order to the postings, no easy to find reference guides. I guess that's why forums like this exist, to get the word out to as many as who care, but we should be getting a better level of treatment fromt eh national org.

Well then they wonder why there is so much complaining about referees and interpretations of the Laws. I think communication is of the utmost importance, ESPECIALLY for soccer where so many rules and interpretations are "judgment" calls. This isn't limited to position papers either. I've still had real issues finding good info on upgrades, assessments, maintenance, and other nuances/requirements involved in advancing up the ranks.

The same referees who don't check the US Soccer website for the position papers, would ignore the information if it was emailed to them. What's the old saying? You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink...

I have only needed my ussf id twice, both where assessments, one was for my upgrade, the other was for another refs upgrade. Needed the number off the card for the form.

A local soccer store offers discounts to referees. I don't think that they've actually asked for my card because I know the owner (and red-carded the manager ;) ). But if I were a newbie I would need it.
I received cards for all of my referee positions (ref, assessor, assignor, & instructor) within a day of each other near the end of June. Maybe I should wear that State Instructor patch to stop players from saying, "It's a rule that ...". :)
