The Australian attendance figures are not right. The highest regular season crowd from last season was 50,334, Melbourne v Sydney in Melbourne. The league final attracted over 55,000. Melbourne averaged something like 30,000 for the season, Queensland was next with over 16,000 average.

That's impressive!

BTW, the Australian A-League had an average attendance of 14,042 in it's second season. It sits around 11th in the world for attendance figures. I think it'll grow to around 16,000 this season.

Some of those European leagues have disappointing attendance figures. Especially France, Italy & Portugal, considering the strength of their national teams.

You have to consider that Portugal only has 10 million ppl, with something like 90 % of the population supporting the big 3... plus the ridiculous high ticket prices and 4/5 games a week live in Sportv (paytv 20 euros month) its cheaper to sign the channel and see 5 games a week of our league plus several games of the premiership, la liga and serie A, than to watch a good game if you aren´t a club member of your team.

Fair enough. How on earth do the smaller clubs survive then?

From those 90% a considerable % support another team or the so called local team, so they end up supporting the local team aswell, plus tv money who make up most of the budget and selling some players, right know Portugal is probably the leading european exporter of football players, there are portugal players everywhere in europe, for instance a Romanian team Cluj third in the league last season has something like 11 portuguese players, plus there are several known and unknown in Spain, France, England, Italy, Germany, Scotland, Russia, Romania, Greece, Cyprus etc etc

Italy average attendances:
74-75 31257
75-76 32177
76-77 32316
77-78 34154
78-79 32857

82-83 33019
83-84 36552
84-85 38871
85-86 35872
86-87 33087
87-88 30621
88.89 29454
89-90 27162
90-91 33255
91-92 34205
92-93 32607
93-94 29883
94-95 29154
95-96 29447
96-97 29481
97-98 31161
98-99 30840
99-00 29908
00-01 29441
01-02 25992
02-03 25474
03-04 25675
04-05 26098
05-06 22476
06-07 19711

There are many reasons for the very poor attendances in the last year..
1) Calcio has no credibility
2) Tickets have high prices
3) Total TV coverage of the games
4) Many important clubs were in lower division
5) There's no joy fopr fans of smaller clubs in going to see matches wihtout any chance of winning cause of 1) the great difference in economic capacity wich separates them from big clubs and 2) the obvious bribing of referees... :D

BTW: next year attendances figures should really be some 5000-6000 higher than this year cause of the return of Napoli, Juventus and Genoa to serie A.

and
1)fan violence
2)outdated stadiums

Neither is a real factor. Stadia were outdated also when the averge attendance was >30.000. And violence is much less than it was during the 70's-80's when there were fighting inside the stadia, in the terraces.
Another factor which i forgot is the new law for buying tickets. For away matches you can't buy tickets the day of the match, you have to purchase them at least the day before.
Then the spreading of the matches over 4 days, sometimes also at working hours, didn't help.

This is the key, as more bigger clubs will go to the smaller clubs, and sell out more games. Then it would be nice to have the traditional small clubs like Ascoli (totally unbias) instead of say Siena, Empoli, Catania and Livorno, where they have a history against big clubs, attracting people to the games.

Hopefully Serie B, keeps the Bologna's, Ascoli's, Bari's, Vicenza's, Modena's, Brescia's and Triestina's - battling for the top spots, so attendances won't drop if these teams make it Serie A, because of their traditional histories in Serie A.

Although teams like Chievo, Treviso, Siena, etc. are all a breath of fresh air, they weren't part of the traditional glory days of italian football, and also are light on supporters (which could be blamed on the current climate (pricing, pay-tv, etc)), but are not that good for attracting crowds against the big clubs when playing away.
