Two questions:
Any one know the all time head to head record for this game and any one know of a site that has these stats, head to head for countries (or maybe just the US?)

Naw man theres been a few meetings since then. I remember Gold Cup, 2000 or 2001, Colombia had another victory just prior, I remember the Colombian fans cheering at the end "Colombia es tu papa"..

The question was directed to efer, but I'll answer it, probably he'll have something to add.
He was the scorer of the goal against Israel in 1989 that took us back to WC after 28 years. However he was left out of the WC roster because of disciplinary issues.
In 1994 he was probably not playing at the same level at was not in the roster either.
Always too much of a rebel and always looking for trouble, he was gunned down in 2004.

Are you serious!? I mean I had no idea, which is why I asked, but I didn't expect that to be the answer. I saw him play while he was at Independiente (of Argentina, almost sure that was the team, but I'm sure it was in Argentina) and thought he had loads of talent. Thanks for the answer.

I'm not Colombian, but I am a big fan of the Colombian team. Like it when they do well,. I remember during the 98 WC, and the qualifying up to it, I was watching alot of the games with a Colombain co-worker, who always mentioned the 5-0 against Argentina, and he brought up a good point. The problem is that they (Colombia) has really never "moved past" that, and simply sat back as if that was the end all, be all, that they got complacent after that victory, and never really improved much after it. After several rounds of Aguardiente he would say sometimes he wishes that 5-0 would have never happened and Colombia would be a better team today because of it.

Sadly it is true. He was a very gifted player with an odd way too move that seemed to trick defenders. He was fast and tall and had a nack for scoring odd goals too.
I recall that after his career ended, he was involved in very shaddy businesses, caught with drugs, unlicensed guns, stolen cars and so on. It was just a matter of time for him to meet a sad end like the one he had.

That game was a blessing and a curse. In a way, everything after that date can be traced to that particular game. But I agree with you, it took us several years to move past it and latter it took us two WC Qualifiers to understand that the players from those glorious years retired and that we would have to find a new way to win games.

I dont know think it was the biggest moment of colombain futbol history, we did something no one thought could be done nor had done before us. WE not only went to Argentina we taught them what soccer was, raped them and made them eat their words when they said Colombia had no chance in hell in winning and that they would always be better than us.
As for the real reason Colombia went down the shitter... its because of discipline. We dont want to train, they arent ambitious, it has nothing to do with the 5-0. The players dont want to train, they dont want to try. Our sub 17 finished 2nd in qualifing and they just got called up again b4 the WC and the coach said they werent training nor eating right !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF UR REPRESENTING UR COuNTRY WHY WOULD U do that !! They thought hey we finished 2nd to brasil thats good enough
We have players who are more promising and better than other SA countries but our players really have no heart. The second they are told hey u are really good and promising they just stop trying and are too into what BIG CLUB is going to buy me and how much am I going to make. COLOMBIA NEEDS PLAYERS WHO WANT TO PLAY FOR US BECAUSE THEY LOVE THE GAME AND WANT TO REPRESENT US. Even if we had lost in 94 this wouldnt change ... untill we have a coach with balls to tell the players U dont care u ARENT COMING !!! Like our new one Pinto... one player had the balls to tell him if I dont have a sure fire place on the team I am not going to the Copa America Camp to train... Pinto said ok ******** off !! and he isnt on the team :)

In regards to Usuriaga, I will give you a "better you hear it from me now than from someone else later" type of comment.
Don't know if you've heard about it, but it seems Rincon is headed down that path. I live in Brasil, and every month or so there is a story (or update) about him, drugs, cocaine and intent to distribute, several standing cases, so if it happens to him also, don't be surprised.

lono...in the colombian forum you can search by any key word and find all kind od trivia and good/bad news.
about palomo: I found out from one the players that palomo during his time at atl Nacional, used to take things from locker room?! One victim was barrabas Gomez, sad but very true back then -
to comment on this players ways to behave; they come from very poor uprisings and their time of glory concides with the time in colombian History that everyone was involved or knew about crooks-mafiosos o ladronzuelos, all of them live next to law obeying citizens. Lifes were confused between the bad and the good, they choose the wrong paths.
lono - tell me this, Rincon was to be married to an educated lawyer in Brazil is that true yet? one figures that an educated influence will make him invest his life in better things...... ( I also know a lawyer is not always the best company, but  )

Thanks for mentioning the Colombia forum. i know that was the correct place to ask those questions, but what can I say, I just got lazy. I will head over there, where more people can see it and chime in.
As far as Rincon goes, I THINK he did get married. I am pretty sure they had a kid together, which came up during a prelim hearing, may have been an extradition hearing for Rincon. He was arrested in Sao Paulo back in May. He was wanted in another (Brasilian) state and supposedly there is also an Interpol warrant for him. They also linked him to Pablo Rayo Montano and money laundering. He is still remembered fondly by many fans of Santos, Palmeiras and especially Corinthians. The funniest is when you say his name correctly, pronouncing the "R", many people look at you with a blank stare, but when you say it with a silent "R" all of a sudden they know who you are talking about.

Interesting.
My perspective is different. I think that game was the worst thing that could’ve happened to the colombians because Colombia was automatically given the tag of favorite, undesrvedly. They weren’t really favorites, they were a bunch of talented players qualifying for their first cup.
In other words, their ascent to the elite was not a product of years of getting progressively better, say like Mexico is trying now, it was because of a generation of great players and more specifically one great game, and the humilliation of a Maradona led team meant to the world.
Colombia’s football has progressed indeed from 30 years ago, but it has never been elite, it has never been in the same level as Argentina or Brazil, probably never will.
One last negative that came from that beating is that the argentines have never forgotten and they are always prepared when they face the cafeteros, no more surprises for them.

It happens to most Latin American nations. I've followed Central American football for a number of years and I've seen that discipline and training go out the window once you're called up to the national team.
