Interesting... I personally think Dunivant is a great left back... I do like Goldthwaite as well, but I think Dunivant would be my choice if I had to pick between the two. To counter that, if Goldthwaite plays considerably more physical than Dunivant, then I might grow to like him more, because I believe that as a defender you have to be very physical. In the end, if they get Sanneh (and if he can stay healthy) then I will take him over either Goldthwaite or Dunivant. He was definitely one of our best players at the 2002 world cup, and he has always been a favorite of mine.

That was over four years ago and him staying healthy is a big IF. Sorry - as much as I liked Big Cat when he played in DC and the '02 WC - he is done.

Yes, it is a big IF, and that is why I mentioned it... because it is unlikely. I would take him over both Dunivant and Goldthwaite IF he could stay healthy.

Not much of a risk either with RBNY picking up most of the salary differential. You've gotta like what Mo's doing up there.
Bruce has only had RBNY for half a season longer and apparently is still not quite done turning over the roster he inherited. Dealing with Mo is a natural since guys like Wynne and Dunivant were acquired by RBNY on his watch -- they are "his guys". Funny, because I seem to remember the defense was playing pretty well with Dunivant healthy and in the lineup. I believe the problems they've had have mostly arisen since his injury.
Ives mentions in passing TFC's signing of Colin Samuel (T&T/ex-Dundee United). It's not news that they want him, but last I heard he still has a visa issue to work out.

Weird trade. Left back for left back. Dunivant is better. I don't get it, as a neutral.
Ives says Arena just doesn't like Dunivant as a player. Great. But he's still better than Goldthwaite.
As a DC fan, this trade makes me happy.

Goldthwaite is quality young talent. I love his ability to attack out of the back, which is something that MLS needs more of from the outside back department. If you look at the upside to this young guy, I would take him no doubt.

Dunivant was very quietly the weak on our backline link throughout April. Still one of the better left backs in the league, but if we're picking up the salary differential for only one year then I welcome this news.

Interesting trade.
Galarcep's contention that the Tyrone Marshall for Edson Buddle trade was an absolute steal for TFC has me a bit befuddled though.

I started to be very impressed with Goldthwaite during the CCC cup. He handled himself very well in a very adverse setting. He was more composed than Robinson in the back for Houston and he made decent additions to the attack. He continued to do the same in Toronto. I like him better than Dunivant.

Maybe Goldthwaite is bait for another trade / move being worked on?

GPK included this in the daily news roundup on the BS front page:

Looks like Colin Samuel is a done deal, too:
"If all goes according to plan, Toronto should also have Collin Samuel in the lineup on Sunday after the completion of his signing and he likely will start on the left wing. The former Dundee United player also can play as a striker."

I hope not - no one deserves to be traded three times in the same season.
Actually, maybe Dave Kingman did deserve it when it happened to him in baseball in 1977.

For all the NYRB fans out there, I hope you guys didn't see the Toronto - New England game last Saturday. You would absolutely not have a remotly positive opinion on him after wards.
Either way, this is a change of scenary kind of deal. We needed better defence, and Goldthawaite isn't the answer. Goldy is more of an offensively gifted LB who has his momentary lapses of judgement on defence. If that is what you guys were looking for, than he will do a very competant job for NY. He is terrific on set pieces and is great on crosses into the box if he is allowed to a play a more advanced role on the wing.

How would he be trade bait when Dunivant isn't? They're pretty similar players.

I don't know their salaries, but I'd assume that would be the biggest variable. They did say that NYRB wanted cap room. Maybe Goldthwaite is not being paid as much, and that's attractive to other MLS teams

you'd think at some point Johnston would start to value team chemistry and building internal team cohesion but that's probably just bringing my own bias to the party.
i realize as an expansion team they're bound to go through large upheavals, but it seems to never stop with Mo.
i've always valued Dunivant, but I thought Goldthwaite has also been playing well after being thrown into the mix at TFC. interesting to see how it will all pan out.
and if Samuel is going to play left wing for TFC, what about Welsh? who, while a bit erratic and not the fastest winger in the world, is still more than serviceable and has largely played pretty well.

Just FYI, you're not going to get better defense out of Dunni. He is a carbon copy of Goldthwaite - great O, not so great D, so this is either about cap $$ (long-term) or other non-talent stuff (i.e. personality conflicts, player request to be traded, etc.)
Not saying it's a bad trade, just saying that you aren't getting anything different than you already had.

The rumour is that there was an incident in training and that Goldthwaite was probably traded because of that. His abysmal performance against the Revolution on the weekend being the last straw for Mo Johnston in terms of his attitude.

without looking at the salaries, perhaps NY wanted to drop some salary and get younger (though 2 years isn't exactly the biggest age gap I suppose)
