Hi, I don't know a lot about Brazilian football and like most Europeans find it very confusing.

However, it is one of my dreams to come to Brasil and watch the greatest players in the world.

I am planning to travel around South America next year and would like to talk to people who live in Brasil to get tips on where to go and even learn some of the language.

When you start following a sport or even just one league you have to a feeling for one of the teams otherwise every game would be meaningless so I will choose to support Athletico Mineiro because I lived with a Brasilian who was as crazy about football as anyone I have ever met and that was his team. Are there any other Athletico fans here to tell me more about them or point me to their web site. (I heard Gilberto Silva has recently moved to Arsenal)

Atletico is a club from Belo Horizonte, capital of the state of Minas Gerais. The city itself is not that beautiful, but the state has many tourist atractions, such as the historical (gorgeous 18 century towns) cities of Ouro Preto, Diamantina, Tiradentes and Congonhas do Campo. Nice mountains, but no beaches.

I don't remember quite well, but last time I flew to BH, It took around around fourty minutes. But the airport is very far from the city (more than one hour ride).

You can go by bus, which is quite affordable and confortable. With reclinable (all the way down) seats, air conditioner. That stop in safe and convenient places along the way.

If you mind sleeping for 7 hours in a road full of turns, I advise you to travel during the day enjoying the nice view over the serra .

If you want to attend a school I suggest Rio or Salvador. There are other great places, but for example I exclude São Paulo, because it too euro\american for me. All europeans I know are crazy about the 1st 2 I listed. Rio because it is Rio and salvador for the african culture and colonial architecture.

Umm, there are a couple teams in both of those cities as well. And don´t forget to check out Sobcontrole on Band. The best game show on the planet.

Atletico is probably my favourite team in Brazil as they gave us the great Cerezo. Would love to visit the Mineirao having tried the Maracana.

Olheiros buscam talentos para o Galo

Clube melhorou a estrutura de captação de jovens valores, o que incluiu a contratação de observadores técnicos.

BELO HORIZONTE - Uma explicação para o excessivo número de jogadores de outros Estados que chegam ao Atlético-MG está no intenso trabalho dos chamados olheiros a serviço do clube, espalhados por todo o País. Atualmente, o Alvinegro conta com quatro observadores técnicos, que acompanham e indicam jovens atletas com potencial para atuar em suas categorias de base.

O coordenador geral das divisões de base do Galo, Cleocir Santos, o Tico, considera que a proliferação dos olheiros nos grandes clubes brasileiros acontece em função da necessidade que as equipes têm de formar jogadores em casa, mesmo que eles venham de diferentes localidades. Ele disse que o Alvinegro não ficou atrás e procurou contratar mais observadores.

"Estamos incrementando, este ano, o serviço dos olheiros no clube. Em 2002, tínhamos duas pessoas que acompanhavam jogadores de fora do Estado. Agora, contratamos mais duas pessoas, em janeiro, e vamos trazer outras duas até metade desta temporada", informou o responsável pelas categorias de base do Atlético.

Segundo Tico, o clube se modernizou e passou a oferecer mais condições de trabalho para o surgimento de novos talentos. "De dois anos para cá, a realidade das categorias de base do Atlético é outra, já que não tínhamos esta estrutura e formação profissional para a captação de atletas, como temos atualmente. Mas a formação de novos jogadores requer tempo e trabalho", observou.

Segundo ele, o trabalhos dos olheiros começa com a observação de treinos e jogos. "Depois de vê-los treinar e jogar por suas equipes, eles nos passam um relatório e aí trazemos os meninos para fazer um teste no Atlético. Chamamos isso de captação, mas temos outras maneiras, como fitas de vídeo, jogos amistosos, torneios, além das peneiradas e os testes especiais através de indicações", explicou.

Novo celeiro

Tico considera que, ao contrário de épocas passadas, quando o futebol nordestino cedia vários jogadores para os grandes centros, a Região Sul é o atual celeiro de craques do Brasil, especialmente para os atletas de defesa, como zagueiros e goleiros. Mas ele disse que, dependendo da posição, outros estados se dividem na formação das futuras revelações.

"Até dois anos atrás, o Atlético trazia muitos jogadores da Bahia, tínhamos vários contatos lá, que nos possibilitou captar 20 atletas, dos quais ficamos com oito. Mas hoje fazemos observações em vários estados brasileiros e conseguimos pegar zagueiros e goleiros no Sul", afirmou, citando como exemplo o lateral-direito Alex e o terceiro goleiro dos profissionais, Marcelo Bonan, provenientes do futebol paranaense.

BELO HORIZONTE - Atlético-MG e Bahia enfrentam-se, neste sábado, às 16h, na Fonte Nova, pela quinta rodada do Campeonato Mineiro, com a promessa de muitos gols e um bom público, que têm sido marcantes nos confrontos das duas equipes em Salvador. Além disso, estará em jogo um tabu de seis anos sem vitória do Galo sobre o Tricolor, no estádio baiano.

A última vitória do Alvinegro na Fonte Nova ocorreu no Brasileiro de 1997, quando o Atlético comandado por Emerson Leão venceu o Bahia por 2 x 0, com gols do meia Jorginho. De lá para cá, o Tricolor baiano derrotou o Atlético três vezes em seu estádio, e os dois empataram uma vez.

O Atlético venceu o Bahia por 4 a 2, neste sábado, pelo Campeonato Brasileiro, e quebrou um tabu de seis anos sem vencer no estádio da Fonte Nova. O time alvinegro manteve seu aproveitamento de 100% fora de casa na competição. O Galo, que ainda não perdeu na competição, também segue invicto há 16 partidas. Com a vitória, o Atlético assumiu a liderança isolada do Brasileiro, pelo menos até a rodada deste domingo, com 13 pontos.

You DO know that the championship is only one month old and ends in November, right?

of course i know that, but a good beggining is always good, don't you think? and it's not me, the press already is saying that one of the Minas Gerais team will actually win the championship... i know it's way too soon, but Atlético and Cruzeiro are showing why Cruzeiro don't lose for like 26 games and why in the last 23 games, Atlético lost only one game, unfortunately to Cruzeiro... Anyways, since none of them have actually hard tough games the next rounds, I think that the difference between them and the other teams, that are already on a 5 point(i'm not considering Internacional, because they suck badly and will fight against the fall) will increase.

an article in today's Superesportes appears to be sending up something of a red flag of warning. So far in the Campeonato Brasileiro five player - the goalie Velloso, right back Cicinho, central defenders André Luiz and Scheidt and the attacker Guilherme have played in all five games without being substituted.

As well as they have been playing, they are men, not machines Given the 46 game schedule plus the Copa do Brasil and the Copa Panamerica, will Galo have the depth of squad to give these guys a game off for rest? Could Galo absorb an injury to Guilherme? It all remains to be seen.

hopefully, our team will have a week this time to rest.... About the championship, if you look closer, we almost don't have games in the middle of the week, as well as all teams, so I don't think our players will get so much staffed out of playing.... But we do have to know that Galo will also play for the Sulamericana, as well for the Copa do Brasil, so, yes, we need more players to substitute them when they need. Hopefully, our diretory should be ready to hire new players in the next weeks, and Fabio Junior will be ready to play his first match with Galo's shirt next game against Coritiba... I will be there =)
