Anyone think the timing of this has anything to do with CA? In the only day between the USA wins the GC and before the CA begins?

Prevents USA fans from travelling down? Hypes up Chavez's thugs, possibly justifying violence?

Thugs? Justifying violence? I would be really surprised if there was more than 500 Norte Americano fans at each USMNT game. Don't you think you are blowing this a little out of proportion?

I would not go to Venezuela right now if you're an American.

Yeah, USMNT support isn't the same as it is in other nations, but ...

Yeah, dictators have thugs, and they need pretenses, see also Chavez shutting down the only TV station he didn't control. And ...

Yeah, it also seems like the wrong hill for Chavez to die on. USA is already sending a less-than-varsity team down there and with fatigue and the group draw, have little to no chance of advancing very far. Why pound on that sand?

It's a little wierd. But Chavez is a little wierd, so maybe it adds up.

And everyone gives Bradley a hard time for his selections.

In the Gold Cup when they put a target on Donovan's head, Bradley pulled him out at half time... when Chavez puts a target on every US Citizen's head, he brings his B team. He's just careful with his selections... we need to plan ahead for 2010, and we can't do that if our A team gets killed.

I'm sure he said it. But it is Fox News. They have me thinking Canada is ready to attack.

LOL Amen.

Perhaps you'll feel more comfortable hearing it from this news outlet, the one that disallows using the word "terrorist":

But the idea wasn't to be political or argue about news sources. It was to wonder why Chavez would do that on this day.

I gotta admit, this Chavez thing sounds very random in terms of timing. Absolutely unprovoked comments with the exception of the US coming to participate in Copa America.

If we really thought it was unsafe ... why send anyone at all? That doesn't make sense.

Chavez is just blowing smoke to get his true believers riled up and he can show huge demonstrations on all the TV networks he controls ... which, as of 2-3 weeks ago, is all of them.

Wouldn't it be awesome if we go to the next round and played Venezuela and destroyed them 4-0 in front of Chavez:D

I'm hoping you were saying this with a semi-joking tone. Venezuela is not exactly the U.S.'s friend right now but it isn't Iran either. Trust me, Venezuelans aren't stupid (though Chavez might be). Much of what their country does economically comes from trade with the United States, particularly oil.

Yeah, except it's so unlikely. I don't think VEN will get out of Gr. A, weak as it is. I see URU with 9 and PER with 6. That means 3rd place can have only 3 or 1, which won't get them through.

Besides, with Chavez and all, it won't take USA:VEN to get a hostile crowd. I don't think any of the other nations are at acute political odds with USA ... maybe MEX ... but that doesn't matter.

The U.S. State Department advised travelers to the Copa America to be aware of "security concerns," and organizers moved one of the semifinals from Caracas to Maracaibo because of fears of crowd trouble.

Chavez dismissed the travel advisory as another in a string of attacks by what he termed "the North American empire."

"There'll be no terrorism or violence here because the Venezuela state, people and armed forces are on guard and alert to neutralize any attempt to sabotage the tremendous success of the Copa America," he said in a nationally televised speech during a military ceremony.

OMG, I had no idea!!! Canada wants to attack us??? LOL

I guess it's better than the other networks pretending that there isn't a group of people out there that want to destroy all americans, or for that matter anyone who doesn't accept extreme Islam.

They attacked us once already and if it wasn't for John Candy we would all be speaking Canadian eh?!

Chavez has been saying idiotic things for the last few years, this has everything to do with him and nothing to do with soccer.

I'm sure there was a little something lost in the translation as well. FAUX News exists to peddle fear. They're fearmongers.
