KK,
Thanks for putting it in perspective for me. We just have to stay close and get hot the last month. If we do that, we are up.

For me Daum is the reason that I can still hope for promotion. Obviously one can blame the inconsistency on the players or the trainer, but I am tired of the coaching carosel. I am not too discouraged about yesterday's game as my feeling is that if they put forth this type of effort, 9 of 10 times their finishing would not be so bad and they'd win. An improvement from some of the previous outings this ruckrunde.
Totally agree.

I'm not talking just about last night. Of course its hard not getting to see a game, but the reports I read seem to question player selection, tactics, Hello Doll(y).
Well, the coach was blamed for the last 15 or so years. It doesn't matter what name that coach had, the articles were always the same. What exactly the problem is is still unknown, but in my opinion Daum is doing a good job.
For one he is saying out loud what he thinks. He has the courage to tell the press to settle down on their expectations, we are a second division club and not the glorious team we once were. Our last championship is 30 years ago, our last trophy 25 years, but still we are being criticized as if we are Bayern Munich.
Daum is realistic and I hope that we get promoted and that Daum stays till 2010.
We lost 29% of our matches, tied 25% of the time and won 46% of the matches.
We are just 2 points away from promotion places
We scored the second most goals
We have the top scorer of the league in our ranks.
We have the most fans supporting their team.
We have the best coach.
Together we will reach our goal: the promotion :D
Ok, we lost one point, means we need to get it back somewhere else. Next sunday is a good time to get even two points back!
@Freiburg: 1 point (got 0 points)
vs Wehen: 1 point
@Offenbach: 3 points
vs Gladbach: 1 point
@Paderborn: 3 points
vs Osnabrueck: 3 points
@Aue: 3 points (will be difficult enough, but we made it happen last season)
vs Hoppenheim: 1 point
@Augsburg: 3 points
vs Mainz: 0 points
@Lautern: 3 points.
= 61 points
= promotion

I appreciate your optimism and totally agree with Panic that you’ve posted another very reasonable and interesting comment here, even if I can’t agree on the Daum part.
The media hype in Cologne is what it is and neither our current manager nor anyone else will change that. Daum has worked here before and knew what it would be like. I guess many fans loathe the overcritical “Kölner Express“, or at least I do. But we can’t do more than ignore these papers, and I certainly don’t buy the cliché that all FC supporters have too high expectations. I find it very amusing – or should I say annoying? – how often journalists come up with the story that we all start dreaming about the UEFA-Cup whenever our club has won two games in a row. Maybe the media in Cologne give this impression, I don’t know, but I doubt that it’s true. I for one would be almost overjoyed if we could establish ourselves more or less like Eintracht Frankfurt has done in the past two to three years: mid-table of the Bundesliga, without always having to fear relegation.
If anything, the installation of Daum has caused more fans to dream of unrealistic triumphs rather than less. The club sacked Latour because the mob was crying for 'master Daum'. I don’t say the latter is doing a bad job for us, but honestly: He was able to spend huge sums to buy the players of his choice before this season, something Latour was never allowed to do. Can anyone claim with confidence that our game has improved since Daum took over? If yes, please substantiate that claim, because I can’t see it. Probably I’m too demanding and strict with the team, but I don’t think we’re playing good football this season. We’ll need loads of luck to promote.
One last word re Daum: He seems already to be preparing for his leave, talking a lot in the past tense about what he once wanted to achieve with the club etc. He stated definitely that he won’t stay in Cologne if promotion isn’t reached, but he wouldn’t even promise to stay if everything should turn out right. I don’t imply that he’s working with a lack of motivation, but I do think that he’s causing unnecessary trouble with these kind of remarks.
Sorry for the overlength of my post.

I live far enough from Cologne, we don't have the Express here :p But I know what you mean.
I find it very amusing – or should I say annoying? – how often journalists come up with the story that we all start dreaming about the UEFA-Cup whenever our club has won two games in a row. It is very annoying, I totally agree. Reason is in my opinion that the press want to sell their papers and want to sell a lot. Giving fans hope of unrealistic goals is a method that they used for years. Or if we lost an important match and the fans are disappointed or even angry the press will pick the team to pieces.
Funkel was also our coach, but some lost matches and revolting fans later he was sacked. In Frankfurt they have more patience, although they've been very close to get relegated last season.
The club sacked Latour because the mob was crying for 'master Daum'. I don’t say the latter is doing a bad job for us, but honestly: He was able to spend huge sums to buy the players of his choice before this season, something Latour was never allowed to do. When Latour was sacked Daum was not available for us - back then the press (led by the Express) made us believe that Daum will announce on his press conference his commitment to the FC. He only wanted to give a health report though.
What makes you believe that Daum was able to spend hugh amount of sums on new players ? Check transfermarkt.de
When Latour came in Winter 2005 he spent 1,650,000 Euros on new players. In his next season he spent 2,570,000 Euros - Nova was almost as expensive as Mohamad.
Daum on the other hand spent 1,850,000 in winter 2006 and 2,550,000 in Summer 2007. The difference is there, but is it really that huge ? In my opinion he got the better quality of players for the same amount of money.
I am pretty sure that if we get promoted the decision whether or not Daum will stay depends on what players we can get for the Bundesliga season. Not only Daum wanted to have a left wing defender - don't you agree that we are short on this position?
Can anyone claim with confidence that our game has improved since Daum took over? If yes, please substantiate that claim, because I can’t see it. Probably I’m too demanding and strict with the team, but I don’t think we’re playing good football this season. We’ll need loads of luck to promote.
I for one enjoy the games more than before again, but i guess this is a personal taste. Players I liked less left the team, the new players that joined are more likeable. Maybe that is what makes me think they play better, I don't know. What I know is though that I see a team on the field.
I am really not sure if one can interpret it that way. In other interviews he was talking about how they plan for the next season.
Like I said in my opinion the decision on his departure depends on what new players we can get. That Daum leaves if we fail promotion is something he mentioned before the season already.
You are right when you say that he is causing trouble with his remarks. But don't you see that this is a kind of tactic Daum is using? The team results are secondary only, because everyone is talking about Daum. That way he keeps the pressure away from the team :rolleyes:

Fair enough, I was indeed wrong and you’re absolutely right re the amount of money Daum spent on transfers, I thought the difference compared to the year before would be bigger. Mea culpa. Good to know we got Vucicevic and Antar for free.
Since you indicated that in your opinion the quality of the new players is better than of those we bought before, I still wonder why it doesn’t show on the pitch. The only live matches I’ve seen this season were Monday games on DSF, and I’ve found our performances disappointing so far. Is it too much to expect less kick’n rush and more of a systematic or creative offensive approach? Of course many second division teams play exactly like us, but we want to be promoted after all…
Agree with you on us needing a new left wingback.

Especially on the last 5 matches before winter break the team showed a good performance. Even on the one in Mainz where we lost. This year we showed only in some situations good performances. I thought during the first half of the Freiburg match we played pretty good.
I am usually watching all matches live, if not in the stadium then on BWIN. Although I have a season ticket it is difficult for me, because I am working shifts. Promotion would benefit me as well, I would be able to visit more games in Cologne :)
If I can get off earlier on Sunday I will be in Cologne as well. Got the ticket for Offenbach already (I am living close to Offenbach) and I am off for the match vs Gladbach :cool:
Am going to scream the team to a victory :)

I did ! :)
2-1 victory and a perfect first half that we played. As I see our midfielders ARE able to score IF there are no strikers available. I was a bit surprised to see McKenna up in front there from the beginning on, but the result speaks for Daum and maybe Wehen was as confused as I was :)
I am happy about the performance of Pezzoni (he used to live close to Frankfurt, a co-worker is his neighbour).
Great save by Mondragon! He saved us the three points. Now we need another three in Offenbach ! Come on, FC !

McKenna was a forward ?
Good to get three points. That's they key.

Good to get three points. That's they key. Yups. He used to play a forward in Cottbus as well and for us usually only during the last 20 or so minutes. This time from the beginning on - and with success! He gave the pass to Nemas 2-0.
