after watching the NT game I became a bit melancholic

Our 2005 attack plays now side by side in the NT and we are still in the 2nd league :(

It might be worse if you were a West Ham fan watching...

Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick, Joe Cole, Frank Lampard, Jermain Defoe, Glen Johnson all earning caps for England. Oh what might have been...

Then as a Feyenoord fan you think...

Dirk Kuyt, Solomon and Bonaventure Kalou, Royston Drenthe and I'm sure I'm missing a few, oh, and they trialed Americans Tim Howard (Everton), Carlos Bocanegra and Clint Dempsey (both Fulham) and they weren't "good enough", when more likely they couldn't afford the talents.

Yeah, Podolski and Helmes... hopefully somehow, they are playing up front for FC Köln together again, sooner rather than later.

:D the FC once trialed Andriy Shevchenko and thought he wasn`t good enough

Holy Crap! West Ham did the same - "He wasn't pulling up any trees" was the famous line Harry Redknapp used to describe him.

What I bet happened is both teams liked him, but didn't have the money that was needed to get the deal done.

Keep dreaming.

I think Podolski is going on to bigger things after he realizes what a mistake he made moving to Bayern and Helmes will do the same after what I think will be a short stop in Leverkusen.......

Dream crusher!

Dream crusher!

Dream crusher!!!

;)

Yeah, its probably near impossible, but stranger things have happened.

What if Köln was promoted, and spent some money strengthening the squad - do you think Helmes would stay? What if Podolski was pushed out of Bayern?

He wasn't that expansive back then.
It is sometimes just nearly impossible to predict how players will develop.

Patrik Helmes got kicked out of the FC Youth only to be bought back years later
:D

Hey Poldi is still young who says he won`t come back some time.
:D Litti came back too

Depends when FC saw Shevchenko. From what I heard, for WHU it was a year before he signed with Milan, so he was pretty damn good at that time. But to be honest, I don't think he was cut out for English football then, or now.

Patrik Helmes got kicked out of the FC Youth only to be bought back years later
:D That happens. Heck Feyenoord developed Pascal Bosschaart, sent him to Utrecht, and then signed him a few years later. Of course he still wasn't ready for Rotterdam.

You never know what happens and why it happens, some guys just want to go home and be comfortable.

He said SOONER rather than later. That's the only part I said "keep dreaming" about. I didn't say they would never go back......

1. FC Koln is in the hearts of those two. I'd be not crazy, but STUPID to say they would never go back.......

Very poor performance from your team in the 2nd half (you can be happy that the referee denied Fürth a clear penalty). Also disappointing atmosphere in a pretty full and very beautiful Rhein-Energie-Stadion imho...

Here a match report with statistics and a few nice impressions:

Was that your "Éirinn go Brách" flag on one of the pics? :)
Thank you for posting them.
Normally, you can count on the atmosphere being really good in Müngersdorf - I guess the performance of our team made the fans speechless yesterday... ;)

No, it wasn't my flag. This time I had no Irish stuff with me...

However, the game was quite open in the first half with a decent performance and 2-3 very good scoring opportunities (that Jan Mauersberger blackout was an incredible gift for you) from/for your team ... nevertheless there was surprisingly little support considering the good acoustics in the stadium and the fact that you almost had a "full house". In contrast to last season, only about 250-300 Fürth fans made the Köln trip, so it wasn't that much noise in the away section that I may have missed the Köln support from the Südkurve or Gegengerade.

Your "Schalparade" during the hymn was really impressive, but the support during the game was quite disappointing even in the first half. Don't know if this was only an exception ... but it seems that the mentality at Borussia-Park and Rhein-Energie-Stadion is very similar (in contrast to Mainz, i.e.): Great atmosphere before the game & during the hymn, but decreasing support from minute to minute during the game if the own team doesn't take an early lead! It seems to me that the expectation & frustration is pretty high in both stadiums after the last season. Köln and M'gladbach are also the only 2 stadiums where I noticed jeers even after 45 minutes of playing.
Maybe, the fans of our clubs think that Borussia and Köln are far superior to the rest of the league and have to win every home game 3:0 or 4:0...

I'm a strict critic of the support at Borussia-Park (the atmosphere at Bökelberg was much better), since our fans are only singing when leading (in contrast to our great away fans). However, it's nice to know that you obviously have the same problem in Köln. 2 great stadiums, but 2 modest home supports due to the unreal expectations of many fans (ok, somehow I can also understand the frustration after the terrible last years)...

I'm not that often at Müngersdorf myself, therefore I always enjoy the atmosphere. You are quite right though, I think we've got indeed more than enough fans of the "only singing when winning" sort. Whether a high scoreline is what they expect I don't know, but they probably assume our team should dominate and outclass every team of the 2. Bundesliga at home. IMO we're simply not that good. Promotion would be a very pleasant surprise for me. Expectations are always too high in Cologne, though not nearly as exaggerated as some media like to make them ("...fans dreaming of UEFA Cup...").

On a different note, are you also annoyed how often DSF points out how high our clubs' budgets are? It should be apparent to everyone with a bit of footballing knowledge that neither Gladbach nor Köln have squads with Bundesliga quality right now, yet many people tend to ignore this fact and draw on the David against Goliath theme all the time. It's not really a miracle to beat our teams at the moment, is it?
Damn, I'd rather be the worst team in the Bundesliga than a top team down in this mess called 2. Bundesliga.

panicfc
20 Sep 2007, 11:41 AM
But that's the cross we have to bare. With our budget, we should be in the Bundesliga, but the club needs to buy wiser and be more diligently.

Same for Gladbach, if we have the budgets, we have be buy talent and use it to move into the Bundesliga. Its not a matter of accepting that we are in the 2nd Bundesliga and enjoy our lot.

Both, Gladbach & Köln, didn't reach their real performance level yet and have to cope with the high expectations ... but in the end, both teams will get promoted with the quality they have! Wanna bet against me? ;)
