Now that the rosters have been released we can anticipate the USA-Argentina lineups. The Argies brought their A squad and the US is a second-tier selection...what does everyone think of these lineups?

---------------Keller---------------
Wynne----DeMerit-Conrad---Born./Pearce
---------------Clark----------------
Nguyen-------Feilhaber---------Mapp
----------Johnson--Twellman--------

-----------Tevez-----Crespo---------
-----------------Messi---------------
----------Riquelme------Aimar---------
----------Mascherano-Cambiasso------
Zanetti---Ayala--Diaz/Ibarra?-Milito/Burd.?
-------------Abbondanzierri-----------

it's pitting boys against men, the US has no chance against a far more experienced argentina squad

---------------Keller---------------
Pearce----DeMerit-Conrad---Bornstein
---------------Clark----------------
Nguyen-------Feilhaber---------Mapp
----------Johnson--Twellman--------

i dont think argentina will use the playes you mentioned, i think theyll want to go easy and rest their better players for their later games

Argentina dont need 12 players.

-------------------Crespo
--------Tevez------------------Messi
--------------------JRR
----------Mascherano----Cambiasso

Not sure about the defense, although Zanetti is a RB not LB, Heinze normally plays a lot of CB for them LB for ManUNited, to get the LB nod I wonder. Maybe:
Heinze---------Ayala----Milito-------Zanetti

Would like to get to see Gago play in one of the Cm spots.

Yeah, someone else pointed that out earlier in another thread...

GolTv just reported the probable starters for Argentina:

-------Abondanzierri------
Zanetti-Ayala-Milito-Heinze
------Gago-Cambiasso----
-----Veron----Riquelme---
------Messi---Tevez/Crespo

Argentina's squad is tricky. There are so many quality players that it's hard to choose.

This is what I'd like to see:

--------------Pato
Zanetti-Ayala-Milito-Heinze
----------Mascherano
--Messi----------------Cambiasso
-----------Riquelme
-----Tevez---------Crespo

This is what Basile will probably use considering recent friendlies and whatnot:

-------------Pato
-Zanetti-Ayala-Milito-Heinze
-------------Gago
---Lucho------------Cambiasso
-----------Riquelme
-----Messi----------Crespo

Excellent analisys
except that you forgot about the fact that Maracaibo is the hottest city in Venezuela and that will help the US that by now should be completely adapted to hot weather.

I hope not. Mascherano has to start. How about something like this?

..............Pato
Zanetti-Ayala-Milito-Heinze
.......Gago----Mascherano
....Messi......Riquelme
..........................Tevez
............Crespo

Who are these guys? Some of these players I am not familiar with. But when you give new guys the opportunity, maybe they will play with heart. Who knows, maybe it will be an improvement over the team that is playing the gold cup. I know they're in the final, but they haven't really played that well.

And Keller has done well in the past against Argentina.

Im guessing the 3 guys that may give Argentina fits would be Feilhaber,Mapp and Nguyen. Their very creative with the ball and play you straight up. Thing is this is gonna be their first taste of real international play and god knows how they will handle it. Im sure Feilhaber should be the best out there considering he played in a couple Champion League games for HSV this past season and impressed.

Im guessing we will bunker alot but that would be pretty pointless with an unexperienced lineup. I hope Bob just lets them play even if we get killed.

Im pretty confident with our backline though. Conrad plays with lots of confidence and gets better every time. Demerit is decent but I just think hes gonna get schooled out there. Wynne and Pearce on the other hand are huge enigmas for this tournament.

Except the US has been based out of Chicago since Sunday and will be travelling down to Venezuala on Monday with 2 days to train together prior to the game on Thursday. Argentina landed in Maracaibo this Thursday and trained together yesterday so they'll have a week to adapt to the heat and each other....

i disagree because this is the hardest group, and Argies have had trouble with Colombia in the past and if they dont finish 1st in the group then they will ahve to meet brasil before the final which they dont want. The 1st game is very very important for all teams have a good 1st game and u will have confidence and less trouble to qualify because realistially all u need is 4 poitns to get to the 2nd round (best 2 3rds make it)

the way i see this group is
Argentina is best team here but have not been playin well lately
Colombia cant score w/ strikers(hope its fix'd come next week)
Paraguay cant win w/ new coach
US sending a very experimental team

to Efer:

Regarding the US backline here's some info:

Marvell Wynne-Defender (Fullback)-Plays for Toronto FC; great speed and impressed at Under-20 World Cup a couple of years ago enough to be picked first last year in the MLS entry draft by RedBull New York; has not really impressed at the club stage, lacks technique and is a liability as a wingback; however has great athleticism and bloodlines (father was a Major League Baseball player)

Jay Demerit-Defender (Watford)-Late bloomer as I believe he's in his late 20s; played in the premiership last year as a regular starter for a Watford side that ended up getting regulated; famous for his goal in the First Division playoff that got Watford promotion to the premiership a year ago. Average defender with good size but average speed; seems dependable but not really an exciting prospect

Jonathan Bornstein-Wingback (Chivas USA)-Came out of nowhere to win MLS Rookie of the Year last year and is converted forward; good speed and pushes forward well; still lacks maturity for his position and makes mistakes; an above average prospect for his position

Heath Pearce-Wingback-Not sure where he plays; I believe in Scandinavia in either Norway or Denmark; haven't seen much of him.

The clubs can be found here:

Mostly MLS, a few younger Euro based players thrown in.

My ideal line-up would be the following:

Carrizo;
Zanetti-Ayala-Milito-Heinze;
Mascherano;
Lucho Gonzalez-Messi;
Riquelme;
Crespo-Tevez

If Riquelme plays like he has been with Boca, then I'd more than welcome him as a starter. If he plays like he did with the NT lately (2006 World Cup + 2005 Confederations Cup final), then I'd prefer to give Pablo Aimar a chance.

I don't think Basile will use this line-up, but it is the one I'd like to see most.
