Enough of this faux Europeanness, your not European, you never will be, so theres no need to name your teams by European traditions. And the Cosmos name has far too much to live up to, it'd be a weight around the team's neck, plus the fact that the name has very little recognition for anyone younger than 30 or who isn't already a soccer fan.

I personally think the historical baggage of the Cosmos name should both be leveraging national and international interest - especially if you get Pelé and Franz Beckenbauer involved - and boost the teams motivation a whole lot. Thus I think it would be great if the Cosmos would be resurrected. Even more so, if the Mets had the ownership, as it would have a nice ironical twist.
The name (Cosmos) was coined by Clive Toye (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clive_Toye), the club's first general manager. Taking inspiration from the New York Mets (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Mets), widely (though erroneously) believed to be short for "Metropolitans," Toye took it a step further: Cosmopolitans, or Cosmos.

Furthermore, along with the NY/NJ derby, the Cosmos versus the Galaxy should make a nice rivalry.

But then again... I'll throw in my vote for NYFC! New York F***ing City!

Would'nt a collision of the Galaxy and the Cosmos result in the end of all existence?;)

I don't think I put a lot of creedence in the whole Mets thing as more than exploratory right now. But if it actually happened with Wilpon as owner/investor and location as Flushing, I would imagine that they would brand the team as "Mets" with all the same logos and stuff a la Chivas USA or Crystal Palace USA. From a branding point of view, it would be too tempting to run with existing success rather than take a chance on failure. Plus it saves money on stationary. ;)

I'm curious whether a marketing professional would back up my hunch.

If this is true, it is enormous for the league.

Not only does it put a tremendous owner in the most critical media market in the league, it is all the more compelling because Red Bull is getting their act together. If the stadium resembles the drawings, Red Bull Park will be the best in MLS. Put the new Cosmos -- and it has to be Cosmos -- in a SSS of equal quality under Wilpon in Queens, and you will have the makings of a tremendous rivalry.

And the league can quickly ratchet this up a notch further. Assuming San Jose gets the 14th team, finalize the 16 teams by getting a team in Philadelphia. There would be so many teams in close proximity that these rivalries would turn white hot. Just imagine some of these games with DC United, Toronto FC and (as they get their legs back) the Fire. (Who knows, Kraft may even get a SSS for the Revs.)

But the best course is still to come. Does anyone doubt that the Galaxy, with a star laden movie star lineup, facing a New York Cosmos team with its own marquee roster, won't draw impressive TV ratings? It would be huge. A celestial brawl.

Forget Las Vegas or Seattle or wherever, to me, the number one priority of MLS should be to cut the deal with Wilpon and get the Cosmos back. And be smart enough to ease up on the cap and let them get some top quality players that a soccer savvy audience will want to see. Do the stadium in a first class way.

And stand back, because MLS is going to be a rocket.

on Fox Soccer Report, from MLS Pulse ...

Speaking of new stadiums, how about another on in the New York Area? Red Bulls could one day have a cross-town rival. Don Garber telling the New York Times recently, "The league's original plan always was to have two teams in New York. Our goal is to have 16 teams by 2010, or 11."

Apparently the Mets are possible backers of the second MLS side of the Big Apple, and there's property near the National League club's new park that could be suitable for a soccer stadium.

Just wondering how the league will deal with all the other interested markets if New York gets another club and there are only two spots left to round out the league's roster of teams.

Did Robert Kraft brand the New England soccer team "Patriots"? Did Lamar Hunt brand Kansas City "Chiefs"? Nope.

So, what if it's not Cosmos? Does the league fold?

This is actually common practice in Europe with soccer clubs that also have teams in other sports. Barcelona and Real Madrid for example have basketball teams that play in the EuroLeague that are called Barcelona FC and Real Madrid CF.

But I don't think Wilpon would name the new team the Mets.

Patriots and Revolution are close enough.

Patriots and Revolution are close enough.

I think that is about as close as it would get. I think they will market it differently instead of trying to create some umbrella club like barca or madrid.

I don't think so either.

After all, Wilpon's fellow baseball owner Lewis Wolff won't name his MLS team the San Jose Athletics. ;)
