They really should have taken this case to FIFA, rather than the canadian court. FIFA has a lot more precedents regarding national team quabbles, and has a better understanding of what things the CSA should and shouldn't do with their players.

Based on the evidence they provided, going to FIFA wasn't going to help them either, unfortunately for them.
