Tap them brakes. In 3 seasons, competing for 9 major trophies, Beckham was able to "lead" Real to one, while major rivals Barca won 4.
Clearly he leaves Madrid in good standing, as his return to the lineup coincided with Real's rise to the championship, but Barca's internal strife opened the door for that, as well. All in all, for the most expensive transfer in history (up to that point) you can't really say that Beckham's move to Madrid has been all that succesful.

He's relatively unhateable because he manages his image so much. Which also makes him somewhat hard to really like. I mean....it's hard to fall in love with a flippin' PR robot.

I didn't mean he was a legend because of the one piece of silver he brought to Madrid. The chronology of his comeback combined with the improvement of his club and country teams is the key to people around the world routing for the guy. You have to admit that he has one of the best "beating adversity" stories that sport has ever seen. You can bank on a movie about these last 6 months of his life. As far as his image, his wife has more influence than he does or cares to have. He is super laid back considering the throne people put him on and I think that's why some people literally worship the dude. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/742997.stm

Well, he lets her control that image, and he follows the "rules of good PR" to a tee. Never says a bad word about anybody. Never offers an opinion that could be in anyway hurtful to a single person. Doesn't engage in any activity that might interfere with the almightly Beckham money making machine.

I think his personality is just very bland and that's why he doesn't throw a lot of opinions around. He's smart about his sport and that's about it. I have a close friend that has a very similar personality. Very headstrong with his sports but never talks about politics, religion or people because he's just not interested.

agreed. but it's a near miracle that with all the exposure he had especially a few years back we (soccer fans who weren't necessarily fans of his team) didn't all just get disgusted. I already dislike Ronaldo for cashing in on his image with magazine spreads, etc, and he hasn't had a tenth of the coverage Beckham had. I think the difference is that Beckham has always known how to talk to the media about the game in a way that appeals to "the base": he comes across as a guy who takes the game seriously and puts it first.

What Would Beckham Do To Your Team™
It's what we've been dealing with since 1/11 (Never Forget™).
Weve lost all salary to Donovan and Beckham. One is on Nats duty, one doesn't arrive until 2012. THEN we have DOUBLED our games played post Arrival™. The G's are not an MLS team but will be renamed "The David Beckham Exhibitionists".
By the way, did you realize that we play 17 extra non-league games after he arrives?
And did you realize that the league backloaded ROAD games to maximize his exposure? And did you realize the few HOME games we have with him land on ENGLISH NATIONAL dates? Better screw the LA fans who already paid than the touring fans.
But it's all ok. We still have Chris Albright. Hey... what?
