Dear Scholars of Real Madrid,
I just read about how Real Madrid signed Di Stefano. It seems that something fishy behind the story. What I read from Phil Ball's White Storm, Di Stefano actually signed for Farca but then SFA suddenly declared ban of foreign players, forbidding Farca to play Di Stefano (thus signing him is useless), and at the end of the day, he signed for Real. Was this something to do with Real, knowing that at that time the club was -considered- very close to Franco? This is not going to lessen my love for Real, only looking for clarification.;)

Barcelona were in agreement with Di Stefano "legal" club-River Plate,Real Madrid -with "pirate" Millionarios where Di Stefano actualy was playing at the time, outside FIFA -piratic Columbian league. Both clubs claimed that they have first option on Di Stefano.Spanish FA came to 'Solomonic" decision -let him play for both teams for one season, starting with Real Madrid. In the begining-Di Stefano wasn't that big success, Barcelona found their own star in Kubala so they sold their rights to Real Madrid.I repeat -SOLD.That's how he became Our player.Ban on foreigners was declared later(not only in Spain, but throughout whole Europe). This is not my make up story, anyone (cules) who has doubt -should go to library and read stuff (magazines, newspapers)from that time(if you don't trust spanish paper, read -english).

Without wishing to go into the specifics of the deal (once again), which was undoubtedly a shady one, the one thing you should bare in mind is that the Cule propaganda machine has had over 50 years to convince the world that this deal was something it wasn't...a case of Franco stealing Di Stefano from them to us.
The whole affair was nothing like as clear cut as that and if you want to look at reasons for Di Stefano joining us you can point the finger at his realization that there was not enough room for both he and Kubala to shine in Barcelona, you can point the finger at the bag of money Saporta and Bernabeu waved under his nose, you can point the finger at Barca's incompetent president Carreto who let him go and at the Minister of Sport General Moscado who probably did ease through the passage of the transfer.
Yes it was a murky deal... though no murkier than many that have occured before, during and after that time...and certainly no murkier than the transfer of Kubala to Barca (Who was got so drunk and thought he was signing for Madrid).
The only difference between Di Stefano's transfer and countless others, is the player that he became while at Madrid.

Haha yes thanks for all the infos. The book also covers things behind Kubala transfer. Even if Di Stefano's transfer is 'illegal' (please mind the quote mark :D ), we can call it even. ;)

In order for Di Stefano to play in Spain, the club in Spain must secure agreements with both River Plate and Millionarios. Neither Real madrid nor Barcelona was able to do it.
People forgot that the Colombian league actually made an agreement with FIFA only a year after it took off in 1949. The star players would return to the orginal clubs in 1954 as agreed upon. In fact, the founder of the breakaway league became a powerful figure within FIFA for years to come. However, Di Stefano went to Spain in 1953. So who was the actual owner of Di Stefano? River Plate, the club that owned his FIFA registeration? Millionarios, the club under a FIFA grace period where Di Stefano was playing his football?
