They're still breathing. ;)

And, Andy, I don't think I was either defending or decrying Julie Foudy. I was just pointing out that my recollection of the event was that someone was quoted as saying they didn't want MLS piggybacking on WUSA attendances, that Oliver attributed it to Foudy, and that everyone accepted it as gospel that Foudy had said it, when, in fact, none of us heard her (or anyone) say it, and we have no proof now, two years later, as to whether she or anyone else said it at all.

That's all I was saying.

1) Don't tell Ian Sawyers.
2) Don't tell Veronica Paysse.

If only my life were as interesting as what I read about on BigSoccer.com!

As much as I'd like to see the ladies succeed, I just don't think it's gonna happen. Soccer itself is trying to break into an oversaturaed market called american sports and women's soccer is going to have a tougher time than MLS.

I would hope that MLS leaves their league alone and lets it thrive or die by itself. I think that MLS taking on a women's league would muddy the waters and dilute their mission, which is to bring top flight entertaining MEN'S soccer to the USA.

Someone a couple of pages back on this thread said there are over twice as many `run-of-the-mill' MLS fans as WUSA fans......

Actually, there are only 2-3,000 more `run-of-the-mill' MLS fans per soccer town than WUSA fans when you consider that almost half of MLS fans are foreign-born Hispanics.

Even American-born, fluent-English-speaking Hispanics and white and black Americans who watch MLS aren't necessarily `run-of-the-mill.' What I mean is, there are a lot fewer fair-weather, casual mens' soccer fans in the U.S. than womens' soccer fans. Part of the appeal of WUSA is the widespread name recognition of Hamm, Chastain, Scurry and Foudy. For MLS, either you are a die-hard fan or you aren't a fan at all (for the most part).

The success of the Men in Japorea has changed that somewhat, but that could fall apart if Donovan, Mathis, McBride, et al head to Europe.

The recent issue of Soccer Digest (if anyone else out there still gets that) had `10 ways to improve MLS.' Number 4, I think, said they need more marquee players, esp. Americans. Number 5 said to let Mathis and possibly other young world-class Yanks go to Europe!!!!

Can you believe the blatant contradiction!?!?!

How are you going to convince new fans to come to a game if there are very few world-class players on the pitch, and when we DO develop a new star, he is sent packing?!?!?

No, I said your run-of-the-mill MLS crowd (i.e., one that isn't part of a doubleheader or other promotion, your basic Saturday nighter) is about twice what your run-of-the-mill WUSA crowd is. A run-of-the-mill MLS crowd is right around 13k. A run-of-the-mill WUSA crowd is right around 6500.

Columbus? Whoa, there, a minute. That would mean the Wusa would actually FIELD TEAMS IN THE MIDWEST. Weren't the first words from the Wusa office something like, "Nah...we don't want those fan bases in Columbus and Chicago and Detroit and St. Louis. Those cities should stay 1500 miles from any Wusa team. We would place more teams in the Southeast first."
