the metrostars/red bulls never played a game in ny, but they market the team as the ny red bulls. how can you not have a team in the biggest sports market in the country? They should play in Queens or nassau county. Queens would be the better choice because of all the foreigners, they already have a built in fan base.
New York Cosmos-2010:D

Never, are you sure about that? Because I'm pretty sure I've seen pictures of a US Open game they played at St. Johns.

MUCH better than the Wiz

Really?

New York averaged about 14K to the Wizards 11K this past season.
That sure is MUCH better. Especially with the size difference of the Metro areas.

Take out New York's double header they had this season, and they drew less then 1000 more people then the Wizards.

At the end of the day it's still MORE people. But it just goes to show HOW MUCH people in NYC dislike the METROBULLS.
I've been saying it all along, bring back NYC's real soccer team. The NY COSMOS!!!!
Let's Go Cosmos!!!!

You said they drew MUCH more then the Wizards, I don't consider that much more, especially with the size difference of the 2 metro areas.

You also have yet to prove that all those people that are in bars and pubs watching whatever other league they watch will come out and support and NYC team.

I would consider Northern Jersey and Kansas City to be roughly the same. I would even venture to give Kansas the nod in comparison.

You also have yet to prove that all those people that are in bars and pubs watching whatever other league they watch will come out and support and NYC team.

They do already. Come to Flushing Meadows park during the week. The very people that are in the bars and pubs are at the games. So it's really all about just placing a team in NYC proper. The MetroBulls are ok for Jersey. Leave them there! But lets call a spade a spade. It's a JERSEY team!

Like you to I'm a Cosmos fan. If it weren't for that team I would have never played or enjoyed the beautiful game as much as I do. I would go out on a limb here, and say for all the mistakes that were made by the Cosmos, and the NASL if it wasn't for that team , and that league soccer wouldn't have had the impact that it has had in this country. To what degree could be argued, but it defintely helped give the sport exposure.
All that being said, I'm also a realist. The sports world we live in now isn't the same sports world that existed in the late 70's, and early 80's. NY isn't the same city.

You need to consider these obstacles:

1) It is almost cost prohibitive to build a new facility in NYC, not to metion
the legal wrangling, and the public support that would be needed to
even get a SSS built.

2) Even the Cosmos moved to Giants stadium eventually. You could not hope
to get people into the NY metropolitan area to see a soccer match, even
with the support the sport sees in some bouroughs. You'd need to get
just more than soccer fans from Queens to make the venture profitable.

I'm just trying to look at the pro's and con's here, and right now I see much more going against it than for it. If you you'd see a huge grassroots movement to bring soccer to the NY metropolitan area, you won't see it happening anytime soon. Public support needs to be there, and enough of it that it gets public office holder's attentions.

Yet the Cosmos still weren't "NYC's real soccer team" as they still played in Jersey at the Meadowlands...
If it exists, I'd like to see some breakdown of the demographic of Cosmo attendees... I wouldn't be surprised if more than 75% of the fans were from Jersey.

I have a proposal for a NYC expansion team:

New York Empire FC

with blue and orange as the colors.

Why does everyone continue to insist on "Blah Blah Blah FC" It's effing SOCCER here. Nothing shouts "pretentious" like FC as part of an American club's identity. It's basically assumed that when talking about a club in MLS that we're talking about a soccer club. That said "Blah Blah Blah SC" is still terrible. If Sure, the official club name would be something like "New York City Soccer Club" or "NYCSC" but how often do you hear someone say "I Support DC United Soccer Club" or "DC United FC" for that matter? It just sounds ridiculous.

COSMOS were great weren't they?

Not really, the Jets were going to build a beautiful stadium on the West Side of Manhattan. It was going to be used for the 2012 Olympics. It was ready to go and the owner of MSG fought tooth and nail to have the project cancelled. He felt that it would take money away from MSG or rather his pocket. Basically his opposition and manuvering cost NYC our own SSS. Public support was strong. Just that this guy had more money and swayed the community board to vote against it.

2) Even the Cosmos moved to Giants stadium eventually. You could not hope to get people into the NY metropolitan area to see a soccer match, even with the support the sport sees in some bouroughs. You'd need to get just more than soccer fans from Queens to make the venture profitable.

Soccer is HUGE in all of NYC. It's always HUGE in LONG ISLAND (white people with money if that is what you are getting at). Jersey is horribly difficult to get to. Within the 5 boros you can take mass transit but going into Jersey just complicates life.

There is HUGE support for soccer in QUEENS and all over NYC. Just imagine that in Shea Stadium where the Mets play Colombian played Honduras. It was a sell out considering the irregular shaped field. If you walk thru Flushing Meadows Park any day of the week, you are going to see soccer games being played night and day. Support is here, we just need an investor!

LOL How little you know. The Cosmos moved to the Meadowlands only because the places that they played in NYC couldnt hold the SELLOUT crowds. I would love to find the demographics and show you that probably 75% of the people that went WEREN'T from Jersey.

I AGREE WITH YOU 100% nothing could be more stupid and ridiculous! It's Eurosnobbery at it's best. That's why I always speak about a lack of a soccer identity in this country. Also it seems that only the names that come out of England are valid. Please for the love of GOD be original!!!

I would.

You think they were drawing 33,750 a game from Jersey in 1979?

The New York Cosmos brand had more glamour and magic about it than the whole of the current MLS put together. You yanks are mental for not taking advantage of it.

But, you know, even if we put guys in the white strips with the little Cosmos logo on them, they wouldn't be the frigging Cosmos and anybody who'd be entranced by that would figure out inside of 10 minutes that that was John Wolyniec out there and not Giorgio Chinaglia.

The brand has cachet to a whole bunch of people over 40, but not a lot of people under that. And once that over-40 group gets over the initial woody from the announcement that "the Cosmos are coming back!" (except for NYC_COSMOS, he'll have to call his physician because of priapism) and buys the new jersey, that's pretty much it.

If the Cosmos brand has so much goddamn glamour and magic in it, to the point where people would plunk down $25 to see the team play, how come the movie about the brand only grossed $144,431 in this country? (I know it was in limited release, but that's like 17,000 people.)

I'm not saying that AEG isn't in the market. What I'm saying is that wherever there is a SSS AEG stands to have a competitive advantage over other promoters. Thats clear in LA, Chicago and Houston. In NYC if I'm not mistaken they still have a fair share of control over REDBULL park. NYC is a major market in terms of concerts and events. Doesn't AEG owning so many teams and having control over the stadiums bother you? Soccer is enough like the WWF without having someone try to control teams and outcomes. Clash, Galaxy, Houston, Fire and DC UNITED were/are AEG teams. They all won the league. Don't you find that strange? In the least bit intriguing? I'm not trying to fight you, I'm just trying to discuss a topic. That is ALL. Dont be belligerent with me.

We will talk about the NASL cabal like you say in a few ok.

leave alone that,i'd suggest it's at most against FIFA's ruling owning more than one soccer team especially under the same umbrella(though i'm not certain how much MLS has even been recognized by FIFA or the USSF to begin with but as long as MLS teams are represented through the league in the CCC and eligible to the Intercontinental cup FIFA should have a say

as i've suggested in other threads if MLS teams wish to participate in FIFA's international tournies they should do it under the USSF's umbrella(Meaning through the USOC)

sorry i woke ya up that late ;)

as for thread's issue, yes i'd kick the red cows ass to bring back the ever heart-lasting Cosmos

The Metros played a few games at Mitchell Field which is in Uniondale, NY. They have also played the Rochester Rhinos at Frontier Field, which is in Rochester, NY. I don't really see how playing games in NY state is relevant to a discussion about soccer in New York City, where they have never played.9/2/1997, the MetroStars played the Dallas Burn at Baker Field, Columbia University, US Open Cup semifinals.
