R used in anticipation.

Any thoughts on this game? Intelligent discussion please.

The Wizards are playing well this year. Morelia is a fine team as well. Should be close games in both legs with advantages to home teams, but any predictions on how the aggregates will end up?

Why didn't concacaf sell TV rights to this tourney. Telemundo ain't doing much for futbol these days. All tape delayed matches from my view.

Salut!

but the question is by how much??? You know Gansler will have all 11 in the front of Meola trying to stop the goals. I think if KC can only lose by one goal, then they have an execellent chance of gettin' over on Monarcas. I guess you need to see if Monarcas wants it or not.

Morelia 6-1 KC.

Wizards were crushed...

Did anyone see the game?

no TV in USA.
Was able to listen to an Internet radio feed on terra.com.mx

Here's the terra article. The accompanying photo looks like a high challenge by KC.

I honestly thought the match would be closer, but hey . . . KC is going to have to pull a miracle out of their ass to get through to the next round.

Was the Pachuca - Alajuelense match as lopsided? I've been looking for a score and can't find.

I can't find anything, either... not on the CONCACAF site, nothing, nowhere. :(

Kirsten, can you PM or IM me as soon as you hear something on that other game? I need it for the report on the website I work for...

Anyhow, no chance of the Wizards advancing, given their depth of injuries and Garcia being banned from the return-leg match. The Wizards may gain solace from winning that match, which is likely with Morelia (according to our Mexican friends) sending a youth or other reserve team to KC while they're involved in a pre-pre-Copa Libertadores tie.

The Wizards can beat Morelia at home in this context, but not 5-0. Nonetheless, it was a great run in this competition this season, and they should be proud getting to the last four.

Cheers,
William

CA Monarcas Morelia took a major step toward their first FC Champions’ Cup final with a 6:1 demolition of Kansas City Wizards at Estadio Morelos on Wednesday afternoon, leaving the U.S. club with a mighty mountain to climb in the return leg on 28 August.
The 2000 Invierno champion in Mexico’s Primera Division scored six consecutive goals – all in the second half – as Morelia ran roughshod over the 2000 Major League Soccer title winners
:D :p

LDU 2 - 1 Pachuca

How does KC give up 6 goal in 45 minutes??? To hell with those fruitcakes. I only wish I could have seen fat bastard Meola's face after all six goals had been scored.

Apparently injuries. Vermes and Gutierrez didn't make the trip due to injury. Quill and Talley were injured during the match. Garcia got a red card, though all 6 goals had already been scored. Simutenkov was denied entry into Mexico because Morelia failed to arrange a visa for him.

Garcia was apparently on the ground holding his leg for the entirety of the scuffle that resulted in his ejection.

What this result, as well as the Chicago result, seem to show is that MLS doesn't have a lot of depth to go with the strength of the starting lineups. While the starters on most MLS teams are on a par with most MFL teams, a depleted MLS team relying on developmental players and A-League callups and carrying a three- or four-man bench cannot compete with Mexican clubs playing anywhere near full strength.

The match reports have Kansas City with a pretty strong lineup, so I don't think they can be making any excuses.

The Mexican fans who saw that game must be thinking what a joke MLS teams are. Truly embarassing for the league.

At least Chicago kept it close and was only a goal away from tieing it up...demas goal in that game was nice too...a solid volley if im not mistaken. Thats when the Fire roster was gone or on IR.

Amen to that. We had Wolff & Beasley barely back for those matches.

Diego Guiterrez was out from damage received to his orbital socket from a post-match melee in the Open Cup match against the Rochester Rhinos.

Morelia will likely do the same to KC again at Arrowhead, if only due to the fact of scheduling for KC:
8/24 (Sat.) KC @ Milwaukee (US Open Cup match)
8/26 (Mon.) KC @ Rochester (a "friendly" due to some bizarre trade agreement)
8/28 - the Morelia match.

I would have liked to have seen the goals actually to see how bad the defense broke down and how bad Meola actually looked. A supposedly World class 'keeper should not be letting in that many goals. Thank god he didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of starting in Corea.

I think what we've seen from a semi-competitive Champions Cup is that Mexican reserve sides are competitive with, but not quite as good as, MLS teams. But essentially reserve MLS teams are not even close to Mexican teams.

I'll agree with that. As our product develops in the USA, we can only get better. . . and maybe be the country to bring the World Cup to CONCACAF. :D (suenos)

Your key word being "essentially", of course.

MLS needs to develop reserve-team programs, in the traditional sense, in order to be more competitive in these types of tournaments. How soon that happens is anyone's guess.

Face it, with MLS teams involved in league play, the Open Cup AND the Champions Cup, squads of 23, 25 players or more would be optimal. 18-man squads just aren't cutting it.

If you see the highlights, you will notice that in a couple of goals, Meola didn't even move. And they weren't such great shots either.

A pox on Kansas City... Morelia beating up on a dog of a team like that is nothing get all excited about.

to re-cap, Morelia beat the worst team in MLS, and a Chicagoon team that is so messed up with injuries it can hardly field a team. as if calling "A" league players up is a solution.

I suspect the return leg of this match-up in a couple of weeks will be pretty obvious. K.C. will try to salvage a little dignity, but why, they're terrible.

Then Chris Klein will go crazy and permanantely injure 2 or 3 Morelia players to make-up for their horrible showing.

All in All... its a fair trade for good inter-continental sport.
