For those of us who take measure in these rankings ...
If they can keep the awesome form displayed last night then I say they go higher. The rankning is about right this time. I'd say the US is top 15 right now.

Accdg to FIFA, this 6-13 ranking does not include USA 4:0 SLV and any subsequent GC game, so that bodes well ...
... but, by the time the 7-13 (or so) rankings come out, we will have played ARG, URU, and COL with our something-less-than-first team. FIFA doesn't care about that (rightly so), so I would actually expect a drop assuming a poor showing in CA. And you know it hurts me to anticipate that.
10-0-1 can turn into 10-3-1 pretty damn quick, making a net +13 into, say, a net +9.

mod, I suggest this thread be merged with the thread entitled "Useless."

You think there's a reasonable possibility we're skunked at the C.A.? Not a single point? Doubtful...

the poss of that happenin is slim, Arg and Brasil are way way better than everyone else in the tournie even with a B or C team that they might send but I think US and Mexico are on Par with the next best SA squads being Colombia, Uruguay and Paraguay. And are way way better than a Venezulea, Peru or Boliva. Chile is going to be an intersting team because they have alot of young players in top teams in europe but thye just dont play well, Ecuador to me isnt a good team they just play well at home and u have beaten them many times.
as for US group, Argentina is the team to beat, Colombia is playing very very close to home and plays well agaisnt argentina and paraguay, not so much against the US our defense we play bad against u in the US. Also we played some of the same teams in recent friendlies and have done much better also we beat paraguay our 1st opponent last month 2-0, beat the Swiss 3-1(BS pk for them that thye got to take 2x) while argentina tied 1-1(argies tied on a pk). I think US has to beat paraguay which to me is the weakest team and then try to tie/beat Colombia or Argentina. This is def the hardest group, I would prefer to come in 2nd or 3rd haha because that way u dont have to face brasil till the final :)
Another problem is that group A is sooooooooooooo easy worst 3 teams in SA are in it, Uruguay is the only good team in their and will have a cake walk and def the gold boot winner of the tournie. Think they will clearly have the top 3rd team. Only 2 top 3rd place teams make it just like Copa Oro which is a problem because Group B is very competive as well as C which US is in. US needs to get at least 4 points to have a clear shot of makin the 2nd round

I think a SKUNK it's doubtful, too, but 2 losses and a draw are possible. We need at least 4 pts. to advance, so who do they come against? I'm guessing loss to ARG, since they'll want to beat the GC champs. That means at least a win and a draw are needed against URU and COL.
As much of a USMNT homer as I am, such good results against these teams with 1) our something-less-than-varsity, 2) on 2, 3, and 2 days rest, respectively, after GC champ game, 3) 9 games in 23 days, 4) COL probably still reeling over WC94, and 5) with only the 3-1 result against ECU as a measure ... all this makes me slow to assume a spot in the QFs.
Som maybe it's not 10-0-1 turning into 10-3-1 but rather 10-2-2, and 4-2-1 over the Jun-Jul period. That still drops us to, say, #19. (For those who take stock in this measure.)
But even with the drop, I still like the USMNT playing the tough schedule. That's always a good thing.

In terms of seeding for WC10 the FIFA ranking won't matter much anyway. USA's poor results in WC06 sealed our fate already.

what do you mean sealed our fate. do we get an undesirable draw when it comes to group selection or something?

I think it means we'll be put in a pool that makes it probable to be drawn into the same group as one of the elite nations (ITA, FRA, BRA, GER, ARG, POR, ESP, and ENG are FIFA 1-8 right now).

I think URU's superiority in Group A helps the 3rd place teams in the other groups. It's very hard for the 3rd place team to have more than 3 points if the top team has 9 ... at most they could have 4, and even then they would have to be on the wrong end of the tiebreak for 2nd place ... bodes well for 4-pt teams in other groups.
So, now we know to root for URU to sweep Group A.

The new rankings are out. MEX (10, +16) jumps ahead of USA (14, +2) due to Copa Am performance.
Enjoy the 14 while it lasts. By my spreadsheet, we'll lose:
1. About 50 points before the 8-07 rankings, dropping us to about 16, with the 2005 Gold Cup points moving into the 25th month passed.
2. Another 50 points before the 9-07 rankings, dropping us to about 20, with the 2005 WCQ points moving into the 25th month passed.
3. The friendly with SWE (20) will actually lower the average, even with a win, by about 5 more points.
4. Looking a little further, UEFA teams will have their Sept and Oct (and some Aug) qualifiers added while we'll just have more friendlies.
I think we'll hover around 18 - 22 until the next national team season.
