Beasley is playing for his nation in the Gold Cup but, with the Americans already qualified for the quarter-finals, he hopes to be granted leave this week.

At least it looks like he won't have to leave the States:
That would allow Beasley to meet Smith, who is on holiday in the States, for face-to-face talks and Rangers expect to have a deal in place by early next week at the latest. But Smith's attempts to land Cuellar appear to be far more complicated after his bid for the player was rejected and ridiculed by Osasuna.
Maybe Smith can stop by Gillette tonight and check out the game -- he might see one or two others he'd like to pick up.

Interesting news--sounds like the Rangers deal is getting closer.
But, if Smith is in the US...do their meetings really have to conflict with the Gold Cup?

my question exactly. maybe the process takes a lot longer than we suspect.

He may have to fly to Glasgow for a team medical no matter where the two parties arrange to sort out personal terms.
IIRC, Alan Pardew flew to NYC to agree personal terms with Spector last year but the medical was still completed in London.

I really hate anyone missing USMNT duty because of contract talks...
however, I guess during this busy time for Beas and the Nats, this may be the only time he can get this done.
Unfortunate timing.

If it means he will only miss today then who cares? The game means very little and we should be able to take El Salvador with our B squad, which is likely to be playing anyway.

I hope the Ranger fans take to him and don't hold his Irish-Catholic upbringing against him.

Will the trade window close before the MLS All Star game? Maybe they'll do some shopping there.

Gooch being approached during the run-up to the World Cup was ridiculous, and I know that the Gold Cup is technically the championship of the CONCACAF region. But for someone like Beasley who was released by his club, and is being approached by someone like Rangers, I have no problem with him potentially missing tonight's game (which would be his second in 5 days) against EL SALVADOR to iron out what looks to be a pretty much done deal. Its not like Justin Mapp, or even Bornstein, couldn't slide into his spot pretty easily against this level of competition. Beasley was looking at the Gold Cup and Copa America as test drives for finding a new club anyway.

I think we'll be ok if Beasely misses el salvador, especially since mexico might not win their group.

The way Freddy Adu played against them might prompt them to give him a chance. :D

Not many of the US team qualify for a UK work permit, by the way. I believe Eddie Johnson and Onyewu would right now, so perhaps Rangers can do some shopping.

Brings a new meaning to the term black irish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Irish), eh?
Wasn't Beasley one of the guys we're expecting to be around for the Copa America as well? In that case, it's probably just as well that the Salvadorians don't get a chance to kick the crap out of him...

I wonder how much these packed tournament schedules hurt the players in regards getting to the 75% plateau. Even if Bradley loves you it's going to be tough to get released and available for enough games, plus rest days, etc. when the games are only a few days apart.

I kinda though Beas coming to the Copa was based on the expectation that he would use both tournaments to be showcased in the shop window.
If he signs a contract before that Copa that may change the math.

Ya think? We no longer rely on one or two players -- our depth is fine. I'd rather have Mapp on the field anyway...

Long term it is far more important for the US to have Beasley in a good club situation than to play an almost meaningless game against frikkin' El Salavador.
Toss in the fact that Rangers is a perfect place for Beasley's style of play and that Walter Smith is a very good coach who has been pro-Yank in the past and as a fan of the US I want this situation taken care of and made official ASAP.
That, and I bet Beas will be a little more focused on the US as soon as his club situation is finalized. (I personally think that's a reason for Gooch's poor play of late. It's got to be unsettling not knowing where you'll report for work in a few weeks.)
