Love him or hate him, his latest column is pretty hard to argue with...

Bruce blew the Demerit and Simek thing.
But, at least, THB put a kibosh on the Brian Carroll experiment.

Kudos to Trecker for a solid column. He takes so much shite here (I've given it to him as well), but that was a tight piece which actually had a (good) point.
Maybe shite is growing daisies now...or at least Trecker is getting better at what he does.

Yes, it was tragic the way US Soccer overlooked Jon Spector.
Oh, wait, he was discovered while on tour with the Bradenton Boys?

Of course, the Bradenton folks had him for two years and never noticed the natural defensive abilities that ManUtd spotted the first time they saw him.

I thought he was ALREADY playing defense when they spotted him??...

He only got the start in defense because they had nobody else. They probably picked him from the other bench dwellers because of his size. They had no clue he would be anything more than a stopgap.

I don't think anything that happened in the Ellinger years can be taken seriously. Anything.
The good or bad. I think it was simple inertia. It would have happned with or without him, and I mean literally without a coach on the sideline.
Ellinger, with his lack of ability and understanding in that job, who would have stayed if RSL hadn't rescued us with their even greater cluelessness when it comes to the game, is as big of an indictment of the USSF and our youth system as there is/was. A horror show.
I won't read it, but even a clock is right twice in a day is the old saying with regards to JT.

"And they recognize the real skill Jonathan Spector, Frankie Simek and Jay DeMerit bring to the back line, and they wonder why American coaches overlooked these players for so long. They also might be wise to wonder why in the world these men are considered the 'second-string.'"
He's stepping too far here, due to previously exhibited Anglocentrism IMO.
These guys aren't just the second string, they're competing to be there. Obviously, with DeMerit and Spector getting top flight playing time, their Nats status is improving.
If by "real skill" he's talking about something displayed against Trinidad and Tobago's third string, I'd remind him of that Cruyff quote on another thread here:
"Everybody knows how to play football if you leave them 5m of space"

Trecker's definitely been better recently. I suspect - although I obviously have no way of knowing - that he was a bit embarrassed by blowing the call on Klinsmann and has refined his approach. Maybe he realized that being the Jay Mariotti of soccer wasn't a good thing. I like to see writers recognize that we've come a long way, but still have a long way to go. I like to see strong opinions, but realism + constructive criticism is the way to go.

OK, I'm gonna come out and say it ...
every time there's a Trecker thread, people always say 'he may be a douche, but he's right about this' ... now, I've said that so I'm not judging here ...
but do we need to re-evaluate? I mean, if everybody hates but admits that he does stuff right ... how bad can he be?
now, excuse me. I have to go take a shower. I feel dirty.

Well,there is a difference between:
1 I agree with his opinion on this issue.
2 The idiot got a fact wrong once again.
2 bothers me much more than 1. Sometimes I agree with him, sometimes I don't, but wrong facts are always wrong....:)

OK, this is what I think happens:
1. Trecker writes an article.
2. Person A thinks Trecker is right. He posts about it on BS.
3. Most people disagree, and maintain that Trecker is a douche.
4. The following week, Trecker writes another article.
5. Person B thinks Trecker is right. He posts about it on BS.
6. Most people (including Person A) disagree, and maintain that Trecker is a douche.
7. The following week, Trecker writes another article.
8. Person C thinks Trecker is right. He posts about it on BS.
9. Most people (including Person A and B) disagree, and maintain that Trecker is a douche.
...and so forth.
Different people agree with different articles. So, while it seems that people like every new Trecker article, overall they actually think he's a douche. Which he is.

A douche is pretty valuable, or do you slurp pole and don't care? (Not that there's anything wrong with that.)

Bruce blew the Demerit and Simek thing.
How so? Sometimes the timing of a player's development doesn't match a certain cycle.
Yes Simek looked good, versus T&T (a team far less talented than the one that went to the WC last year). Yes he is promising, but he really wasn't going to help this team during the 2003-06 cycle. He was not going to beat out a more refined Cherundolo.
Demerit hasn't yet really impressed me. Mind you, he hasn't gone Chris Albright on us in any game either.
