I didn't mention New Zealand so where did that come from? You tell me coz i never typed that in my post! By the way we have played more than 2 but they were not sanctioned by FIFA for some reason.

Can we cool down a bit peoples? Rest this debate. That is for the rivalries section

Let's look at the most recent two then. 1998... scoreless draw (in San Jose, not LA). I seem to recall it being a B/C team on both sides - no less than seven Americans got their first cap IIRC. 1992... we were quite admittedly crap at the time, I'm surprised you didn't beat us by more. Most of the players who played in that match have probably retired by now.

they won't even make it out of the first round...what a waste of a slot...
GIVE IT BACK TO SOUTH AMERICA...or give it to antartica instead

Yes very constructive there.
If you have anything intelligent to say think it out first then post it.

I think you are quite wrong here I believe that they will qualify for the second round but we will have to see come 2006.

Sigh, the perennial struggle of the Australian football fan, gaining respect. I look forward to silencing the arrogant in 2006.

The reason why we do not have respect is because we haven't qualified and the problem is that we should of in 1998 and in 2002 but failed at the last hurdle. But to completely silence the critics we will need to qualify 2 in consecutive times and play very well in the finals. But that won't happen until 2006 so what is the point debating now when the qualifiers haven't started? :) New Zealand are improving and it was a tough game against Japan and France which the should of lost 2-0 not 5-0. Australia will beat the kiwi's if the full strength side is playing but if we don't then New Zealand are in with a red hot chance.

We are only frustrated because we know we can do well but the near misses have annoyed us and are wanting the team to make the finals in 2006.

It looks difficult now, again.

If Australia will be first in Oceania, and I really think they are able to beat New Zealand, then they have to play against the 5th team from South America.

Uruguay or Paraguay or Peru or Colombia..

Could be easier!

I think there's nothing official yet saying that the OFC champion will have to dispute a playoff against the #5 from Conmebol.

Today's FIFA decision only gave back 0.5 spot to South America and took the authomatic berth from Oceania. There's nothing mentioning who are gonna play who in the playoffs.

Blatter has even suggested the possibility of a round-robin tournament with the 0.5s from each confederation.

Thanks, my friend. I didn`t know that.

It could be against the 4th placed Asian nation. The OFC wants that so they can push to join the AFC.

OR this one is interesting.

The best OFC team, the 4th AFC & the 4th CONCACAF team in a 6 game round robin. 3 home 3 away abd the to 2 go to the world cup.

There are many solutions being floated around but FIFA cannot be trusted. OFC join the AFC to avoid such pain.
