The ref was terrible, period. We should be used to CONCACAF refs. We know they are shit. It hasn't changed. Let's move on. A ref can influence a game but he didn't make our play in the second half terrible. Our emotions and our tactics adjusting to Guatemala are the prime reasons were had to hang on.

So what if "we" (I assume you mean the USMNT?) should be used to it? That doesn't excuse them for being incredibly inconsistent and horrible in their interpretation of the rules and play of the game.
On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd like to give this ref a pile of dirt.

What can you do about a poor ref? Nothing. You have to keep playing. Bitching and moaning on the field always comes back and bites you in the ass. BTW, this is hard for me to say considering the type of player I was.

Thank you. Do we have to bitch about concacrap reffing after every game? When will we finally learn to deal with it?

I hope he lost a sizeable sum of money! Only one yellow against Guat and 4 against us?

As bad a game as Gooch had the referee's poor officiating made it look even worse. I noticed a number of plays where Gooch was shoulder to shoulder with Ruiz, and Ruiz using all his guile, craftiness and flopping would go down and get a foul called. In some of those situations the ref penalized Gooch for simply being bigger and stronger. A good referee would be able to discern the difference between a clear push to gain an advantage from a 50-50 battle. Gooch clearly deserved to be called on some of those fouls but certainly not on all. More than Ruiz, I think the ref's calls (or non-calls) got under Gooch's skin. It's like I've told youth players- you have to adjust to the ref, even if he's a sack of ----. They never stop a game to substitute a referee (unless he can't physically continue), so yeah this guy sucked, but Gooch and the rest have to deal with it. I hope they learn a lot from this game.

Was he worst then the ref in the Italy game Larrionda reffed Mexico-Paraguay last night.
That was an interesting game, to put it mildly.

Absolutely correct.
I said over in the defender's thread pretty much the same thing. Ruiz et. al. are expert divers. And Gooch is unfairly singled out for being so immense physically.
In the NBA, coaches send tapes of calls to the head of officials. Bradley should do the same for Gooch. I bet if you look closely at the tape, many of Gooche's fouls were perfectly fine challenges.

Either the referee was very affected by the crowd (which was apparently pro-Guatemala), completely biased by himself, or utterly incompetent.
It was ridiculous.
I'm just glad that despite having what seemed like 95% of the calls against the USA when Guatemala was being significantly dirtier and rougher, the US still won and no one got hurt. That Gooch got a red is irrelevant really, that just means Demerit gets to play the next two games. I think that's actually a great thing.
Gooch will be back for the knockout rounds. I think he played Ruiz fairly. How two soft yellows like that can be given to the same player in the same game is beyond me. This referee is seriously a conniving little piece of shit and I hope that his career is hurt by this. But CONCACRAP is so thoroughly corrupt I can't see anything come of this.
All in all, though, let's be honest. There have been worse referees before. At least he didn't gift Guatemala a penalty kick. That would've been a bit much considering they barely stepped foot in the penalty box...but some referees are capable of amazing things.

Nice post.
He was complete and utter shit and his career should not emerge from this game unscathed.

The bad news is that both the refs from the Italy and Czech games from last year are part of the pool of officials for Copa America

Did Gooch get his first yellow for a foul or for arguing the foul call? The ref was shiite, but Ruiz totally outsmarted Gooch. With a ref calling everything under the sun against you (or your team), at some point you reel in your play...

Did Gooch get his first yellow for a foul or for arguing the foul call? ... For a kick, after the foul was called on Ruiz.
