Thought I'd start a thread to keep track of all the results in the GC. We can scrutinze, nitpick, or just follow the other teams and see who the US may end up playing as the tourney goes along.

From yesterday:
Canada 2-1 Costa Rica
Haiti 1-1 Guadeloupe

Interesting to see that Canada took the early grasp on things. Maybe they go 3-0 in the group instead of Costa Rica, and we could face them in the semis instead of Costa Rica like many people thought.

after what happend yesturday, i could easily see it. Theyre favored to meet us in the semis i imagine looking at other possible opponents now. I could see Canada going up against Guatemala now, and i could easily see Canada taking that one too. Canada lost out on the Stanley Cup again....so id look for them to be extraordinarily pissed and come out with a vengence :p.

and power to Guadeloupe too, they could yet sneak in that third spot. Another tie could realistically do it.

You're right...both Guadeloupe and Haiti have a shot at earning one of the two best #3 spots by virtue of their tie. The only problem is they have to get results against Canada and Costa Rica.

I can see them both going 0-1-2 (W-D-L) and crashing out with only 1 point, meaning it would be very iffy for either to earn one of the two #3 spots.

But, should either pull off a surprising result (tie or win) against CR or Canada...then they for sure have a shot.

I imagine that this has already been touched on, but how can Guadeloupe be permitted to field a team in an official regional championship when they are not even a real country? (part of France)

That would be like Hawaii being able to field their own team in the tournament.

Fifa uses their own set of criteria for determining what countries/regions can have a football federation and field teams in official competitions (such as Confederations' Championships).

do you really expect residents of Guadeloupe to have to cross the Atlantic to try to be a part of the French NT? it seems logical that Fifa would grant them their own federation and NT.

i was impressed by them last night (not that i was expecting much and they were only facing Haiti -- not to belittle Haiti). but I would love to see these smaller nations continue to get "surprising" results in groups A and C or the Gold Cup.

I thought Canada looked very good last night (or maybe the Ticos were that bad).

Wouldn't it be more like Puerto Rico?

Start swimming, guys!

Guadeloupe might be stronger if all of 'their' top players didn't play for France.

Per Wiki:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guadeloupe_national_football_team

... As part of French Republic, Guadeloupe is not a member of FIFA, and is therefore not eligible to enter the World Cup, but they do compete in CONCACAF competitions.

Football (soccer) is popular in Guadeloupe. Thierry Henry, a star of the French National Team and English Premiership club Arsenal FC, often visits, as his father Antoine was originally from the island. Lilian Thuram, a star football defender for France and FC Barcelona, was born in Guadeloupe. The French national team and Manchester United striker, Louis Saha, is also of Guadeloupean descent as is Swansea City goalkeeper Willy Gueret.

Other French internationals from Guadeloupe

Pegguy Arphexad
Pascal Chimbonda
Bernard Lambourde
David Sommeil
Ronald Zubar

Not that this list proves anything, but ...

I expect us to make the semis without much difficulty, but I wouldn't set the odds of our winning the tournament at more than fifty-fifty. Any of the KO rounds could go to PKs, for example.

We'll do fine as long as our players don't start believing everything they read on BigSoccer.

If you dig through the above-quoted thread, you'll find the worst BS prediction I ever made.

Costa Rica is young, so I'm not surprised that Canada won last night. They will get better as the tourney progresses.

Two things about Canada:
1. DeRo out wide left... really? I think this neutralizes some of his best attributes.
2.DeGuzman is a wierd player. There were severall times where he couldn't complete a pass and then the had 2 great goals.

Haiti looked flat, but they'll have homefield through the first round, and 'Loupe is better than expected.

Also, do you remember Martinique?

They've played in the Gold Cup before (in our group too) and they are also officially part of France.

How about US Virgin Islands? Guam? (both like Puerto Rico...part of the US, but with their own feds and NTs)

Holy sh!t!!!!!

40+ yard absolutely perfect free kick bomb by Sylvio Spann of T&T to put them up 1-0 in the 9th min.

It will be goal of the tourney. He was only like 10 yards from the center circle, in the mid-left channel.

EDIT: Looking at the replay and the way the lines are cut...it was about 42-44 yards out...blasted from left center to the top right corner of the goal, keeper barely gets a fingertip on it, but it hardly redirects the ball, bounces off the post just inches below the crossbar and ends up in the goal.

I suggest if you have Telefutura...flip it on. Lots of shots in this game both ways. Very attractive football compared to USA/Guat.

And definitely flip it on right about midnight ET to see the halftime highlights and catch the replay of that goal!

T&T 1-1 El Salvador

El Salvador pulls one back with a nice cross, flick back, and finish.

EDIT: Ramon Sanchez was the goalscorer.

No it wouldn't. The original Hawaii analogy was correct. Guadeloupe is legally as much a part of France as Paris or Lyon are.

All that said, I don't mind them in the Gold Cup. Basically, they are there to make up numbers.

Neither T&T nor El Salvador look good in the 2nd half...completely different from the 1st half.

Both look gassed and sloppy by the 55-60th minute. This is when the US can pour it on against both teams.

I expect big wins over both of them if we can finish. It will be way different than the Guat game, where they actually were not gassed...

...and as I write this El Salvador goes up 2-1...Dennis Alas puts back a rebound on some poor defending and goalkeeping by T&T

Recap of the other group B game...

Final: El Salvador 2 - 1 Trinidad & Tobago

Trini scores first through a 40+ yard free kick bomb by Spann

El Salvador answers through Sanchez and Alas on either side of the half.

Technically El Salvador leads the group based on goals scored, having the same difference as the US.

However, the US should take care of business as both teams looked gassed and sloppy by the 60th minute, much, much, much more so than Guatemala did against the US.

I really hope El Salvador takes Guatemala in the next game. I think El Salvador comes out firing on all cylanders knowing that a win pretty much moves them to the next round. I hope they pull it off.

On that note i hope Guatemala doesnt get to the hex either. They play the ugliest soccer i have ever seen. Costa Rica, Honduras, and Mexico are fine divers in their own right, but Guatemala makes them all pale in comparrison
