Seems like River Plate fielded a relatively weak team - Are some players injured?
Where was Ludueña or Lucio? - And was Maxie in the whole game or only the 2nd half?
These guys really shoulda won - Or is Copa Sudamerica considered a minor tournament?

Lucho is recuperating, Maxi came in at the start of the second half for Gata, and Hachita never plays anymore. He just sits on the bench and rots.
Reports are that Atletico de Madrid have the hots for Lucho right now.
This is only the third year of existance for Copa Sudamericana, so it is certainly of little relative importance and prestige when compared to something like Copa Libertadores.
There have been other attempts at tournaments other than Libertadores, most recently Copa Mercosur (clubs from Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay) and Copa Merconorte (which in its history featured clubs from Bolivia, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela and the U.S.), both of which were held from 1998-2001.
A proposed Copa Pan-America for 2002 to replace those two tournaments died. Then Copa Sudamericana was created. Brasil refused to participate in the first one, citing conflicts will their league scheduling. Nissan came aboard as the chief sponsor for the 2003 edition.
